I got a call from a Kiwi mate last night and his recent experience with bureaucrats on MTB'ing is the complete antithesis of what we're battling.
The below links are to the govt planned $50m NZ cycle trail plan and my mates proposal which has just got the ok from govt for millions of dollars of funding. Yes that's right not only is the govt interacting with cycle groups, they're championing it and even happy to fund the trails!!
Anyway the Trail will be 60km initially with the possibility to link into a 150km trail in total in a later phase. While it may not be a flowing single track I have no doubt it will be much used. Will be shared use walking and mountain biking with 4 huts along the way for overnight stays. One sentence rung out to me..."Mountain Bikers and Trampers will share equal standing...neither moving in on the others territory"...we can only dream!!!!!

First time I've tried linking on this site so I hope the above links work.

We can all dream. But on the left side of the pond, not much will happen until the NPWS's own rules get changed. I am patiently waiting for this day.

The NZ govt has only changed it tune as far as mtn biking on DOC land
This has only come about after 10+ years of advocacy, lots by the Kennett bros http://www.mountainbike.co.nz/
Most of the DOC trails will be seasonal, in the winter. Not that there's any shortage of tracks here,
But there are some awesome rides in the pipeline, The Heaphy trail for one, would be mint for a overnighter!!!
