Greetings,

Me and a mate are looking to complete the standard loop of Red Hill on Sunday morning. Possibly with one or two side trail diversions thrown in for good measure.

If anyone was interested, you are welcome to join us.

Park at the normal spot on the street on Lady Penrhyn Drive.

Liam,

I may join you (I'm going to the cricket in the afternoon and I have to see if I have enough brownie points to go riding as well).

I live at Cromer Hts, (at the end of the Cromer Connector) so I'll probably ride the trails to get to Lady Penrose Drive.

In case I'm running late , what is the normal riding loop.

I'm interested in this one too, but concerned about my ability to handle the technical parts of the course.

How would you rate it compared with Manly Dam?

(I'm also doing the AROC adventure race the previous night, so I might be fast asleep when this rolls around)

Red Hill is not for beginners as parts are very technical, but Red Hill is also a place were you will improve your skills. I always wear pads for Red Hill, I never wear them for Manly Dam.

If you have doubts about your ability, keep a look out for the skills/training days offered every so often.

Hi Paul,

Well, I guess we never keep to the plan on rides like this. Everyone always pipes up with their preferred trail, so we go with a consensus.

But to make it easier on you, I can hang around at the start for a little bit if you are running late. You would be welcome to call me and let me know if you are late. The more we get out the better.

But to answer your question, I was thinking of doing the generally agreed clockwise loop (most of this is what I call the "main trail").

We start from the carpark, through the BMX jump area, then take the fast downhill chute towards the Corner Cut, and making a beeline through this single-track for the Drop Zone. Once now back on what I consider the main trail, we follow this through to the Garden of Gullies, and complete the main trail back towards Lady Penrhyn Drive.

If, say, you were running really really late, you could cycle up towards the Drop Zone and meet us there. I am sure we will spend some extra time there checking out some drop-offs.

Hope to see you there champ.

Cheers,

Liam.

Ian,

IMO you would be able to hack Red Hill. The ride I had in my mind does cater to all levels of skill, as the trail has multiple lines to pick from. Hard and easy - within the same section of trail - so you can do what you consider is right for you. Plus, when you ride by, you can have a good look at the harder bits for yourself, and see what others are doing.

We usually slow down at these harder parts, so no-one gets left behind. Riders can use this as a hands on learning experience to check out how it's done. Also, most riders will walk their bike through some sections of Red Hill, there is no shame.

So do the easy bits, pick and choose the hard bits. There is ample opportunity to try some intermediate rocky bits to boost your own skills. Red Hill is very good for teaching you that. It is awesome fun. I always wear my arm and leg armour at Red Hill.

A bit like learning to swim, just get out there and enjoy it. Hope to see you there.

Liam.

Liam,

Count me out this time - the cricket takes priority.

Have a great ride

Paul
