Kids bikes and trails

Hello to all. This is my first forum so please be gentle. I have a 6 year old son who is starting to ride well enough to get on BMX tracks and some flat ish fire trails. Can any one recommend a great bike for me to buy for him. I want gears, hand breaks for around $200. I am also keen to hear from others who can reccomend some local (Cromer) rides. We have done Central track in Terry Hills and both really enjoyed it. Does any one arrange kids and parents rides on the week ends?

I take my two kids boy 12 & girl 7 on the Narrabeen Lagoon “out and back” from the shops carpark, near the bridge. Its an 8 km round trip, both can do it but my girl is tired and grumpy by the time we get back to the car park. We have ridden it about five times. I have taken my son on the Cascades fire trail from Wyatt Ave through to Davidson then back to Belrose on the road but that near killed him lol. If you’re keen we should arrange a few parents and kids rides, at the moment though kids sports and dance are killing me time wise especially now at sport season change over.

Answering you question about 6 year olds and gears, personally id say don’t go there yet. I recently bought my girl a larger bike with hand brakes but also had the back peddle brakes functioning. She can’t get used to the hand brakes. My 12 yr boy has a geared bike but still is reluctant to use the gears to their full ability. Id stick with single speed.

Look forward to catching up soon

Hi Greg

Thanks for the great advice. I think I will try a get a demo on a geared and non geared bike and see how he goes.

We ride most Saturday mornings so I let you know if and where. I would be great to have a kids and parrents sub club with a tab with recommended rides. I wonder if other people would find this of value, or may be you and I are the only old guys riding with our kids on the Beaches.

Thanks again
