How annoying?!?

So

Took the new bike out for it's maiden voyage this weekend. A little trip down to Canberra to play on the flowing singletrack of Mount Stromlo, all very nice and very exciting.

Anyway, we headed up the switch backs for a while and then realised that we'd forgotton some kit so, took an early right and headed back down to the car. rolling along some really nice single track we hit a bit of a bump, perfect for getting a little air on my new beast. Me and the bike went up, and came down at which point my brand new front forks decided to split in two. Que major stack, lots of blood and much swearing!

Now I'm not a heavy bloke (62kg on a bad day) so i'm a little puzzled at what's happened. I'm guessing this isn't normal for front forks and it certainly hasn't happed to me in all the time I've been riding. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this experience?

Cheers

What fork was this?!

Sorry to hear about the accident and glad to hear you are OK (relatively)! Shocked

Post a picture so we can see where split.

were they a bargain from a Taiwan ebay seller like these http://nobmob.com/node/12829 ?

I take it was the Sids seen on your new bike pics?

Even though they are an XC fork I find it very strange that they would snap after a small jump with a small rider!?

Or this thread is rubbish, ideally of both the injury and the broken fork!

was the wheel still attached to the lowers? I noticed they are QR and if the wheel came off was it pre or post crash.

Pikey swears by the Dorcus brand
That could happen to any carbon post!

Oh, and bummer about the fork
Please tell me the bike wasn't all scratched up

Glad to hear you're relatively unscathed. I have to say a fork or cockpit failure is one of my trail riding nightmares.

Thanks for all the comments...

The forks were Rock Shox sid race forks, the very same as on the new bike http://nobmob.com/node/14437. Fortunately most of the rest of the bike is intact. Ok, so the saddle didn't survive the crash which is a bugger as I'll need to get another one of those too.

In the process of uploading the photographic evidence. Nothing very exciting just a straight sheer across the beam which connects the forks. The knee on the other hand is an awesome mess of blood and scraped flesh, lovely stuff and well worth an oggle.

Post accident the wheel was still attached, just the broken fork, bent saddle and mashed rider. Very strange.

Will keep you all posted.

Of course these things never look as impressive in picture form, but hey. Feast you eyes....

Damage...
Damaged forks
More broken forks

Cheers

There was an early run of 2010 boxxer that had issues snapping there. Rockshox apparently changed the manufacturing technique and it's been good since.

Best to take it back to place of purchase and get them sent in for inspection

@Pikey: maybe you need to pick up some titanium hardware like me to shed some of that 90kg Eye-wink

@Brian, I'd rather fit back pedal brakes than use something that belongs in a circus Sticking out tongue
