SS was a wise choice
Well this was such a tough and fun race!!!
It reminders me of wet winter rides back home in Dunedin after a big snow storm has melting away to leave everything sodden wet.
The night before the race I was been hasled about riding SS especially since I had a nice new race bike as well.
As it turns out it rain most of the night which produced the wetest track I have ridden on for a very long time....
I started off the back of the first wave and moved my way through to mid pack just before the singletrack. It turns out a lot of Aussie riders have never ridden in mud like that before and the pace reflected that. Once I got through a bit of traffic I found my mud riding Mojo, this meant that I got the 29er doing 2 wheel drifts and one foot out sam hill styles around the corners.
Then the EBB slipped, it appears as though I lubed it up too well and It kept slipping, I had to stop and fix it 3 times during the race along with having air up my front tyre twice. (whos says SS dont have problems). Oh yeah I also have a very sick set of brakes as well. One of the rear pads has a hole worn through it where the piston goes..... opps. The front pads were stuffed as well I have worn through over half of the metal backing of the pads.
I think I spent the last 30km or so with metal on metal at the front and nothing on the back. Man it was fun!!! the descent off the top of stromlo was interesting, horrible noises told the 50km riders that I was coming from a km away, they were off the track out of the way LONG before I actually got to them.
As it turns out I didnt get a result as the timing system missed me somewhere along the line, I finished just on 1pm so it puts me in the 5.35 hr mark so I finished either 2nd or 3rd in SS.
The race was SO MUCH FUN, I love mud. I will be back next year for another crack at it.
p.s photos of the brake pads to come (well whats left of them.....)

Nice one Gav... good to see someone else enjoyed it at least as much as I did.
Did you actually ride all of that gloop at the start of Stromlo then?
Yeah it was very hard work, I rode through about 70% of it I reckon, big wheels and SS meant the wheel just kept turning over without to much slippage Had to walk a couple of the uphill pinches though.
SO when is the next race in the mud like that? :-)
Well, I think I better wait till the mud has dried from the inside of my frame first
