Interesting idea...but will it work?

"The bikes feature adjustable seat height, disc brakes, three hub gears and a carrying basket, and weigh around 18kg (40lb). Running of the scheme has been contracted out to RACV (Royal Automobile Club of Victoria) and US firm Alta Bicycle Share, which runs similar systems in four North American cities."

18kg :S

It's sad to see a local company hasn't become involved in this.

I was in Melbourne over the weekend and saw 2 of those bike hire stands in the city. My wife and I were chatting about them and drew the conclusion that Melbourne helmet laws mustn't be as stringent as ours as there were no helmets. Thanks for the article it clears that up.

They are however wasting their time as nobody would dare hire them for more than 10mins at a time as that's how quickly the stupid weather changes down there and you could find yourself peddling in a blizzard. Wandering around the city we would peel off layers one moment then have to hide from torrential rain the next!
