How is Manly Dam

Has anyone checked out the status in the last day?

[Mod. moved to Northern Beaches]

I haven't but I can guarantee it will be wet. There's still standing water all over Nolan's reserve at North Manly and on the drive up Allambie Rd there's still heaps of run-off coming down the gutters. That's always a sign that the Dam will be too wet still.

Will be better to wait till the weekend then.

Very unlikely that it SHOULD be ridden until the following weekend.

The top surface in many places will be drier but loose and still prone to damage. Its also quite possible that the large volume of water could have moved surface cover which might be best if shovelled back into place. Maybe the rangers could organise a day to get things back to a useable level.

If you to ride, RNP is mean't to have faired quite well. Menai should also be mostly fine.

I live at Allambie and there is soooo much sandstone just below the surface that water just seeps out for days and days after rain making everything almost as wet as it had just rained. With the amount of water over the last few weeks, it is likely to take another week although, given some sun, I am sure that it will be packed this weekend.

I rode it the other day and it was terrible. I thought it'd be OK to ride since I never received an email from them stating it was closed due to rain. Can anyone tell me why they haven't officially closed it for the last 2-3 weeks? It is with no doubt that it should have been closed.

Also, are there any upcoming maintenance days to help fix it and maybe even make it more suitable for wet conditions? I mean it rains everyday in the North Shore Vancouver and they never close the trails and don't get much damage...there's got to be something we can do...

Sadly the rangers have stopped using the mailing list and were always a little inconsistent in their closure policy anyhow.

We shouldn't have to be told when not to ride though - common sense should apply. I mean, 'dampness' from 3-4 days of heavy rain will clearly take a lot longer than a week to dry out, especially in winter.

As for maintenance days - we've been told that they may or may not return after the PoM review. See:

The good news is: the PoM review process has actually started.

I've received official reply that indicates Council will be doing nothing until the POM review is done. No maintenance, no works.

Most of the water problems on the trail are a result of poor routing - the entry into 19th Hole is a classic and water just gushes down there. It seems to end up going down and around the 19th Hole rocks and undercutting the gravel at the bottom of the last C-line rock roll-off... so get your bum well back off the saddle and down over your wheel.

As to the original question, I'm not far away from daveh and yes, the amount of seepage is high. It will be a good week of dry windy weather before you'd even bother looking at trail condition again.

Just because Council can't be bothered engaging with us or has seemingly lost the knowledge on how to manage its own systems to advise us of trail closures doesn't mean we shouldn't use our own common sense.

The singletrack between 19th Hole and the playground is badly chopped up at the moment. Other sections all around the circuit will be suffering the same. Please don't ride.
