Bike riding in Mt Annan after close

By Scottboy - Posted on 30 December 2010

I received a email today asking people to not organise riding of the new Mt Annan tracks after closing time , as we all know there are limited amount of tracks to ride on if people keep abusing the use of these important measures they will be taken away from us very easily . So for eveybody pleasure of riding make sure you are already riding way before the gates are closed & you are a member of friends of the gardens or get in the park early in the morning just before it opens .

another email that the rangers are seeing ppl in the morning too & thinking they are not friends of the garden members as well , watch out ppl we don't want too lose these trails

What are the operating hours - are they posted anywhere at the site?

I think Hawkeye means is there any opening times physically posted at the actual Mt Annan site. Eye-wink

That's what I meant... signs on site mean no excuses.

FWIW, IMO the rangers should be issuing on-the-spot fines for non-compliers.

BT - There are gates at all of the entrances. They don't open until 10am except for the pedestrian gate, which is a pool style gate that you can go through. I can't recall if the gates have signs on them.

the park on the left hand side there is a price listing & the opening closing times are on there also I think

That's good - makes things pretty clear.

So help me understand the situaiton - this is gated access only? Haven't been out to see for myself yet.

I believe the BG are fully enclosed.

Can anyone explain why this much needed facility is only open to MTB during the hottest hours of the day?

Bikeboy's picture

Phil, pay a reasonable fee for the year and you have access to the trail from sunrise to sunset all year round .
Good facilities , room to bring the family for a BBQ etc after the ride .
My only drama here is the Bloody Magpie that still hates me , have been swooped twice since AFTER christmas

I like getting out there at 630am ,park out the front and enter through the "pool gate"than ride the fire roads down to the track do 3 laps and ride back on another fire road ,the rangers have never asked to see my friends of the garden membership they just give me a friendly greeting and go on with there business.
I haven't been attacked by the magpies lately though, they must really have it in for you Wayne Eye-wink

Wayne, an excellent suggestion. How much is membership?

Bikeboy's picture

The Grand total of $ 76 per year for a family . For what its worth i have been a member for the past two years and have renewed for a further two , although i live within 3 k's of the trailhead i still think its worth the money if you are a little further away as well .

Craked , we should tee up a ride soon as i am there around the same time too , i have also worked out that i have had my Sydney 24 hour race jersey on each time i have been swooped by Maggie ( its a black and white magpie looking jersey )

hawkeye's picture

The bit of reading I've done on magpie strike seems to suggest they can recognise individual humans, so maybe a change of jersey and helmet colour might be useful? Or maybe try to feed it a few times so it know's you're not a threat. That's worked for a couple of guys I know.

I have a couple of butcherbird "friends" on my commute route. The scoundrels mimic magpie behaviour even down to the calls, but they're not as good. Their targeting is nowhere near as accurate - which has once or twice resulted in the drawing of blood. Sad

hey Wayne, how about this weekend 6.30 am at the pool gate ? but dont wear your sydney 24 shirt!
