Appin
Hi All,
Thinking of doing Appin soon and want some indication of how technical it is. Have read the garb here Rob has very kindly put up, but still unsure if my abilities can cope !
Have ridden Manly Dam numerous times, get off at a few places where my limits force me, so with an intermediate ability, how would I go ?
Cheers, Scott

You should be fine. Just assess the obstacles before attempting them and if you aren't confident then walk them.
I'll get out there and hit it up!
Cheers, Scott
Appin is my favourite track - each time I go there I tick off a few of the obstacles on my To Do list - they are reducing - i think I have it down to 3 things to overcome. The roll down into the bridge will be the last thing to do but it has to happen in 2011 as I set it as one of my riding goals.
We usually ride the first lap as a 'session' lap to practice the tricky sections and then the following lap(s) are normal laps.
Have fun
I rate appin as the hardest xc course i have done however it is also my favourite. There are B lines for the really hard bits but if you want a comparison 60% is as tech as parts near the golf course at the dam. If you can clear the dam you will be fine if not you will just have to walk a bit. Take you fist lap slowly and you will be fine
I find the hardest bit is exiting the first creek crossing allthough I cleared it last weekend I still reckon its the hardest section of the track!
I don't even attempted the first creek crossing. Everything else is fine though.
Appin is a brilliant track and should be a model for XC tracks. Hard enough to keep everyone interested, easy enough for everyone to ride but build their skills.
Witnessed my first 'swimmer' on the long bridge last WE.
Good news for all, you can stuff up the rock roll onto the bridge and the worst that will happen is you get wet....very wet
I've never seen anyone fall from that rock roll down but that is all I visualise in the lead up to it and looking back up at it. One of our friends 10year old son did it first attempt, damn I hate that!
The key is to follow a better rider and don't hesitate. When you think about it too much, that leads to hesitations which lead to accidents.
in the shower that morning (which is when I set my list of things I am going to master that day), in the car on teh way there and in the winding track that leads to it. The guys I ride with all make it look easy as and the silly thing is I have apparently ridden down scarier things but it is that damn bridge that makes me stop. But this year those mind games will stop and I will overcome the Bridge of Death! I'll post a picture of that picture of me nailing the roll down!
Tru that Brian, follow someones lead and don't hesitate.
Once you do it you realize how easy it is . But it took me more than half a dozen laps to summon the gonads to hit it , and did it by just following and turning the mind of to a zen like state
This thread got ness and I on the road and out to appin, so glad we made the trip as it now rates as our favorite trail. The two big a-line roll offs had me second guessing myself, but what choice did I have after my wife took them both on and made them look easy. Got to say, they are easy, once you have done them, you will wonder what the fuss is all about. Given us both confidence to take on other sections on other trails we ride, as we both cleared the second lap. Can't wait to get back out there
Rode it for the first time today.
Got round no problem rode everything relatively easily but decided not to do another lap as it was only my second mountain bike ride after nine months of the bike so I waited while the guys went around again.
It reminded me a lot of the technical stuff and single track at Manly Dam and Bantry Bay theres is just a lot more of it while a bit tricky in places none of it is really too challenging or that hard for me its just a matter of learning the track and getting comfortable on my new bike and riding off road again.
The only way is too jump in and have a go.
