The best bit about Chris' event, he had his priorities sorted. He always handed a beer to everyone coming over the finish line. You Choccy Feeters had better carry on the tradition or else!
I'm in a team with craked and Dicko. It will be good to get a few teams up there for a bit of friendly competition
I did the Fat Tyre Festival at Awaba last year and its such an awesome track for this.
just need to sign up. Today....
@Brian, Craked and Dicko, you boys will make a quick and very competitive team, what name did you go with?
Nice one Phil. I think I might need to make a bit of my training at Awaba leading up to this. I'm racing there on Sunday but if the weather forecast is correct I'll be giving it a miss.
Our team name is the good, the bad and the ugly. I'm not sure which one is which though
OK, all registered! 4th time lucky for no mechanicals and a top 10 finish this year? There's only one way to find out!
$20 each into a pot - fastest lap between the ponies and the uglies riders take the pot.
I.e rider with the fastest lap time takes $120 !
Looking for someone quick though....
I'm up for that. Maybe a ground rule of official times only (not garmin profiles).
Go on then count The Ponies in (sure the other two will be up for it), I guess someone has to win it.
BTW it will only be $100 - $20 is from your own pocket. But I like your thinking!
I'm so pumped about this I'm heading up there tomorrow to start sussing out the track and where I can make up every second
Let me know where
P1 Jos: 35:59
P2 Brian: 36:06
P3 Craig: 36:25
P4 Phil: 37:06
P5 Wayne: 37:56
It's going to be close!
You guys are hilarious!
We're working on the beer, by the way ... no promises but we'll do our best!
Went for a spin today and at least I worked something out. I'll be using my Cannondale for this as I defiently need the full suspension.
The 4 Hour I did a few mths ago was on the hard tail. It was my first prolonged ride on the Hardtail and i really felt it at Awaba on the downhills. Forearms were killing after 4 hours.
It is surprising as Awaba feels relativey smooth, but guess it all adds up. Aftera few more rides on the Hardtail I worked out how to ride smoother an absorb more of the bumps better. Forearms are just getting stronger now.
I think you will be right at the FTF - it's only one lap at a time. All the time at Awaba is gained on the climbing and the Hardtail is beSt for that.
Having all that - I prefer riding Awaba on the yeti for fun - the downhills you can just relax and hit it hard without the concentration required for the HT to keep the right line.
By the way how is the new berm at the bottom f the downhill on the new section ? I always had too much speed coming into that hard right at the bottom - its a perfect place for a berm. I presume that's where they have put it.
Brian are you gonna come clean with your lap times for today - or you keeping it under wraps ?
D
Ha ,I was thinking the same thing (about his times that is).
I was feeling really flat today so only did two laps. I can't remember the times but the first was just a cruise and the second I wasn't feeling the best. They were in the mid to low forties. I'll post them when I get back home tomorrow.
I still think for me the Cannondale will be faster. I'm planning on hitting awaba up a bit in the next two months.
Also, next weekend daylight sayvings starts so I'll start riding during the week as I've only been riding on the weekends and I don't do any other exercise so watch this space
I will try and join you some time, would like to check out the new stuff.
No worries. We'll have to get a team session before the big race
I'll keep an eye out for any training rides up there. Don't want you lot to have too much of an advantage on race day
Just been on the choc foot web site and saw that the GPS trace is now up.
Is this the red loop?
That profile doesn't have the new section. If they plan on using the Red Loop which I couldn't see why they wouldn't then below is the Red Loop profile
About time we started talking about the weather for this
Sunday is looking good but the days leading up not so

Rider lists are posted
http://www.chocolatefoot.com.au/singletrack-mind...
I live only a few km's from here... I'll be intrigued to see what the call is come Sunday. It's pretty wet at my place.
The place is jinxed for this event. Hate to be a fun stopper but I'd be amazed if it goes ahead
Not happy at all
Ah c'mon! Let's not jinx it! Have you ever known a forecast to be correct this far out? Don't you want your free beer?!
The locals are onto it, they know the deal at Awaba and will advise us accordingly, so fingers crossed that Sunday we'll be enjoying Awaba (albeit maybe a little bit muddy). And we'll do whatever it takes to restore any damage if that's what happens. Let's think positive folks!
Fi
im keeping my fingers crossed, this is going to be my first enduro/bike race.
With the weather in mind what will the camping areas be like.
Also what tyres will be suitable for the conditions. Currently have crossmarks front and larsen on the rear but I struggled at times recently in Rotorua with this setup. Larsen got clogged up and felt like slicks at times. Guessing more grip in the front will also help.
Let's hope the track drys out some warmer weather Sat will help. Would be too good an event to miss. Staying positive and yes I'd really like a beer after the first lap
Andy, why stop after the first lap? have a beer after every lap! lol ,I reckon the chalenge will be getting your car in there without getting boged!
Yes that's going to be quite a problem. 4WD access only.
@Fi
There's just one spot in particular on the road in that will get quite bad. What are the chances of getting the landowners to chuck some agg down?
I recon I'll have to leave my ute on the road. The warm up can be the cycle to the start!
Hope the weather picks up and this all goes ahead.
I was thinking about using performance enhancing sweet beer instead of electrolyte drinks
It's copping it up there!
http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR043.loop.shtml
It's going to make it interesting racing that's for sure. The leaches will be out in force as well.
Its looking better
http://www.weather.com.au/nsw/cooranbong
Weatherzone are giving a slightly better forecast:-
http://www.weatherzone.com.au/nsw/hunter/awaba
Not sure how the different sites can give different forecasts if they all get their information from the BOM.
Only used once.
Hey Pete, I'm not sure how an increase from a predicted 21mm of rain to 80mm over the next 3 days is better? Maybe better for ducks?
Better grab that snorkel
That's why the optimist in me looks at the link I posted
Don't forget its not like Manly Dam. Awaba is a well designed trail that does drain well. It's only the salad bowl and the chute area (I think that's its name) that will be sketchy. Everything else will be sweet as
You will need to include the fire trails in the sketchy category
Don't forget the firetrail that all the cars need to get in. I reckon the guys with 4WD's are going to make a few bucks pulling people out.
They did lay a lot of road base where the last bog hole was on the road in.
Has this happened since we were up there last month?
It was the % chance of rain I was looking at.
Anyway, I'm still looking forward to it what ever the conditions. It'll be good to meet a few more fellow NobMob -ers too.
I don't want to trash my bike riding in mud and sand ,I have a lot of riding to do over christmas ,
But I will If i have to
Craig, I'm pretty sure its dirt up there and not the grinding paste like Sydney in the wet.
There's no sandstone up there
However, dirt + rain = mud
If it's anything like the wet laps at The Mont earlier this year it's going to be a lot of fun out on track.
SRAM Singletrack Mind Series Round 8 ¼ postponed to 18 December!
Dear All
After having rescheduled this event from April after a somewhat biblical torrent of rain, we tried to appease the weather deity with offers of beer and chocolate feet but alas it would seem to be in vain. The Newcastle region has received over 70mm of rain in the past 4 days and a HUGE dump is expected tomorrow. Sunday of course is expected to be mostly fine and sunny, but that won't help the track, so needless to say we're going to postpone the event AGAIN!
The decision hasn’t been made lightly. We’ve been talking with the Club, other locals, and monitoring three different weather sites, for the past week now. Check out the rainfall for Cooranbong. While the forecast was gradually improving, this morning’s forecast sees the weather focusing most of its energy on Friday with 40-80mm predicted in the region. The access road into Awaba is tricky when wet and currently has a river running across it which will probably mean that most 2WD cars won’t make it in. And needless to say, the dunny truck and other services who were booked to deliver on Friday would have no chance of getting in. The track has several sections that will be currently under water. Even with possible fine weather starting from lunchtime on Saturday, it’s just not gonna dry out. Rider safety & enjoyment are paramount to us, and knowing how much effort and time the Club puts into that track, there’s no way we want to be responsible for any potential damage.
As there's almost 500 of you registered and you're probably all gagging to do the event we're going to reschedule, but as there is only one month of the year left and summer is on its way, our choices for dates to reschedule are kinda limited. We’ve settled on Sunday 18 December which will most likely be difficult for some but great for others, so we sincerely apologise if that that date is going to put your Christmas present buying schedule in to a tailspin, but it's the best we can do with the limited options we have got.
Also if the 500 or so beers we've bought for you sit here over the Xmas period ... well I don't think we could be blamed if most of them 'disappear' so the sooner we get the Series wrapped up the more likely you'll get to taste our specially made Enduro Lager and we won't have to sign up for AA.
The long range rainfall prediction is also looking good for that date (fingers and legs crossed): http://www.weatherzone.com.au/long-range-forecas...
As you'd be aware and was the case with the previous rescheduling, your team or solo entry will be automatically rolled forward to the new date on 18 December and as per the T&C's that you read before you signed up there's no refunds or transfers to future events, but you can transfer your entry to another rider or team. Check out the information on the web to see how to do this. We’ll need to receive all changes by midnight on Wednesday 14 December so please let us know sooner than later.
BUT … given the event had sold out, we may well receive interest from new riders for the new date. So, if you or your team is unable to attend on 18 December, send us an email with the details and we’ll try to fill the spot and transfer the money to you. If you have previously contacted us, then obviously your availability for this new date may be different so please contact us again so we can be sure that your entry is still available.
So put December 18 in your diary and prepare for the best Xmas party ever, Santa has confirmed he's now racing (sans Reindeer!) as a warm up event for his Christmas marathon, though he is a singlespeeder which is a little sus ... There will also be beer, chocolate, good tunes (no Xmas musak!), a truly ludicrous amount of prizes to give away and of course 8 ¼ hours of Awaba's fine singletrack, the best present a mountain biker could ever have, so start the celebrations early with us on 18 December!
Cheers
Joe & Fi
