Wheels - the never ending question...

I happened to be looking around on my favourite online bike store (that results in credit card fraud - yep someone kindly decided to spend $200 on my card, no problems getting it back) and I came across the Pro-Lite Allein Wheelset: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?M...

I know the Australian dollar is at a record high, but for $360 this wheelset comes in at 1660 grams. I wondered - what's the catch? All the forum posts on the wheelset seem to pretty positive - on the first page of Google there isn't one bad word about them. This could be because there isn't a review on mtbr for all the haters to vent their views on.

Out of interest, does anyone own these? Has anyone ridden these or even seen these? Or can someone explain why they seem to be priced so well for what is on offer? Is this truly a well priced product? I'm currently running a pair of Sun Ringle SOS (which are heavy enough for a train to run over and still be true...) and I'm looking for a better wheelset for races etc. Whilst I have an 'AM' bike at the best I might ride XC, minus (big) drops, at worse fire trail in the Blue Mountains.

Whilst on the topic of wheels has anyone had experience with Controltech skewers? I've had a few occasions where my QR skewer has come open and these look very nice: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?M... I don't mind carrying around an allen key for the job of taking them on and off.

I have been riding a pair of the Pro - Lite Bracciano road wheels for a year now with good results. They were only $400 from the Pro-Lite Oz web site, so have proved to be a gargain considering the rough roads I train on around Homebush and my 96 Kg weight. They are light and stiff and only the rear wheel has needed a slight true up so far.

A pair of the MTB wheels are on my list!

I can't comment on the Pro Lite's but you could get a custom built wheelset from CRC for about the same price. You could get the ever popular Hope Pro 2 Evo hub built into almost any rim you wanted. For a light wheelset you could lace it into a NoTubes Crest rim for a lightweight tubeless wheelset that will be compatible to almost any axle available.

I also have a set of the Bracchiano road wheels. Brilliant, great bearings and seem pretty rugged. I have put a few thousand km in on Sydney roads with no issues.

My son has just fit the slightly lighter pro-lite road wheels to his bike. I am probably going to fit the pro-lite Alleins to my mtb in the next few months, so I am keen to hear any feedback.
