I've never seen anything like this in Long Reef,

I was worried for sec until I saw the Long Reef part, I thought there were referring to the site next to Freedom in Balgowlah. (pre-emptive reply to 'shhh thats our secret jump site) - you can see the jumps from the main road... it ain't secret.

Maybe they should have put a sign up to say 'No fun without council permission' or 'pay a premiun rate' to have these jumps......poor kids miss out
and the lantana wins, then the council will need OUR money to rid the lantana

Slower more conservative councils are coming on board. Willoughby, Kur in gai and Hornsby all becoming more accommodating, even in the blue mountains. It is growing to a situation where Warringah is failing in it's provision for off road cyclists. Why no public volunteer build days? Can’t anybody establish a relationship with them?

you would think they would learn from the council responsible for the grove destruction and subsequent rebuild (that has taken about a year so far)
There is some seriously out of touch people making decisions.....im going to call the council tommorow!

What a waste of money!

I know the place. It was in ok condition but recently it had started to go out of usable condition coz there's no access to water to keep building bigger and better jumps. Also Freedom's just undergone some major upgrading so the council has probably justified the destruction of Long Reef for the more popluar Freedom. Still, it would have been nice to keep the LR dirt jumps there...
P.S. does anyone know if the djs on Elm avenue in Belrose (near the Centre track and Cascades) are worth trying to rebuild or will they be bulldozed by the council because of private property etc.

" Can’t anybody establish a relationship with them? "
Believe me, we are trying very very hard......

Long Reef was different to freedom in that the jumps were much easier and a perfect place to learn to DJ. It had been going through a bit of an upgrade over the last few weeks which was looking very promising however the very thin layer of foliage between it and the walking track most probably attracted the attention of a nosy resident that has made a complaint to council.
I think that councils are often happy to turn a blind eye to such unauthorised developments however if they are formally notified they are pretty much obliged to tare them down. Sad really
I'm guessing that there are not many riders of freedom on this site however just in case there is please don't park in the Freedom car park or the same will happen to Freedom jumps. If you really need to park there please park on the roof (not the caretakers spot) or the grass. Cheers

This is precisely why I keep saying that people need to approach councils, etc. to formalise trails and other features. Very sad as you say Sad

Problem is that it is difficult to approach council about your illegal trail without formally notifying them if it's existence. Can be a very big risk to take and not all rider/builders have a law degree.

Well, as this case shows and as I have said before... sooner or later any track is going to be discovered and most likely removed if not authorised.

At least by approaching the land manager up front you are scoring a big win for honesty and showing you want to do the right thing. This really should go a long way to putting any land manager on side.

Unless of course you do go to the trouble of drawing up a plan to legitimize, maintain and promote a trail network.

You get all you facts and figures, put together a presentation, organise a meeting and take a day off work to attend only to have the woman in charge quickly glances at the document and hands it back saying "We really don't need to know about these.... We have too much on our plate and if I knew about those trails I'd have to shut them down as we don't have the resources needed to look into approving them."

In that case it's game on.

Yes, until some busy body forces land manager to pay attention with an official complaint.

Anyhow... interestingly someone from Warringah Council just called me to say he'd seen the story and that they have some news on Seaforth Dirt Jumps.

See: Seaforth Dirt Jumps (aka. the Grove) to open soon - Demo riders required!
