Though i would replace all my gear cables and outers because there too short. First time doing this sorta thing so is there anything i must look avoid or do to make my life a little easier.

I also picked myself up some chain lube and was wondering if its the right sorta stuff to be using. I got the chain wax.

I also noticed that my hubs aren't running very smoothly. There not the best hubs (standard ones) but is there anything way i can clean them or what not?

Slowly learning how to maintain my bike myself so thanks for the help.

Good on you @Jonathan for having a crack at it.

Best tips:

1. Get copy of "Zinn & the Art of Mountain Bike Maintainance". Expect to pay about $40. Websites are good but a bit hard to have them laying on your garage floor while you work.
2. Go to the manufacturer's website for your gears & hubs and get a copy of any technical doc's they have for download.
3. Best tip of all is watch someone who knows what they're doing in action. The books & tech doc's are good but nothing like those little extras you get taught from someone who knows what they're doing. Having someone physically show you how tight a bolt goes or how much grease to use or guide you through the workings of your limit screws on your derailleur's when you re cable them is much more effective than what you learn from reading.

Good on you for having a go. I think it's important because if you break down in the middle of no where then it's you that will be fixing it, not the LBS.

Time is well spent on gear cables. 90 % of gear change problems come down to the cable. Have a look at Sheldon Browns website (the late Sheldon Brown) - lots of wisdom.

Other than that, full length cables are good and buy a really good pair of cable cutters - it's crucial for cutting the outer without crushing it.

PM me if you need a hand.
