Great idea, wonder how small you could make it?
Now I can blast my way through traffic!
You don't cut a precise line through the road
I have minor concern that when they're first introduced, car drivers default reaction will be "What the hell is that?!" and in craning their neck to get a closer look, will drift into the bike lanes.
That said, I do think it's a great idea and wish 'em the best of luck.
I have lost all hope that a laser or any other device is going to assist.
If you look where the person is riding in the photo it's in the death zone of car door opening. Not a great start.
I've had two cars in the last week see me from behind honk and flash me, then speed past when less than 50m away they could easily pass without trying to kill me. I can only concur that when people get into a car they switch off their brain.
In saying that, I make a special effort not be the person that is holding up the traffic. If I think the cars will be faster I'll usually pull over and let them all go past. Sure it adds a minute or two the trip, far less stressful for everyone.
I'm very tempted to enter politics for the sole purpose of changing the motor licence system. Every 5 years when you get a new card I'd force people to ride on the road for 30 minutes whilst everyone tries to run them over. The they might realise what it's like and waiting for 30 seconds won't change their life.
Morons. /End rant.
Andrew
i would tend to agree that this would be the cause of more accidents given the fact that this is a device that emits a laser (green at that - reflection of that beam would be dangerous off paint/reflectors etc - due to the wavelength and the eye's innability to close prior to doing any damage to the retina - but that's getting into optical wavelengths and laser modulation and is a seperate argument) pattern that would be distracting to drivers (think wtf is that) and potentially reacting poorly to the presentation of this symbol in front of a bicycle.
whilst i agree cars and bicycles should share the road, i think cyclists should also understand that they fighting for space against machines that are in excess of a few tonnes, common sense should dictate not trying to pick a fight.
being a party on both fronts i have seen cyclist do honestly stupid sh*t on the roads and then wonder why they get run over, that being said drivers (especially in Sydney) are notoriously impatient - me being one of them on the odd occasion so i do understand the arguments from both sides.
there isn't really a win/win solution i can think of that works for all (when i come up with one im sure i would be rich )
anyway thats just my opinion and my 2 cents worth
