But these bikes aren't really suitable for riding on mud? What are they for?
For riding when the trails are too wet so you don't get too crazy (the track even has a roof so you dont get wet

1 TT bike (for those with tri-athlete aspirations)
1 pub/shopping bike

No offence (and this might change when I'm older... say... 100 or something) but I'd rather get a stationary bike or trainer and watch TV/read/surf the net/whatever while riding than do many Ks on the road.
I mean, you already admit that road riding is only for when it's wet, so instead of going out and getting cold and wet on the road, stay home and stay warm and cozy and entertained.
Plus, there's less chance of death that way - and sadly, this is no joke
FNWTR (Friday Night Winter Track Racing) sure beats FNWTV (friday Night Winter Television).
give me the open road any day, trust me its alot more fun than most would think especially if you get in a decent size group.

Guys, your comments have given me renewed vigor to challenge my better half that three bikes is not too many.
I actually have 4 (but I don't count the hybrid with the child seat) and none of them have road tyres or drop bars.
If you don't hear from me tomorrow, I'll make a post when I get out of intensive care.
Convince her it is cheaper keeping the third bike as a spare. That way when you break things you don't have to run off and get parts from whom ever has them in stock, you have the luxury of time to shop around.
Besides having the extra bike means you are less likely to break things in the first place. Take the 575 to Red Hill and you might be carrying it home.

O the folly of the single man - a lesson shall be learned in due course. Its a bit like a 100km ride - can't explain it, just gotta experience it.
7 bikes between two seems about right, to my good fortune the Minister of Finance and Keeper of the Keys to the Lower House is also a rider - although she still doesn't quite understand why I need at LEAST 2 MTBs (currently 3 but about to swap one out)and a roadie.

Experience is something you usually get right after you need it.
at present ive got a cross country, freeride, 26 inch racing bmx and custom road bike. im aiming in the near future(in order) to purchase a 26 inch trials bike( see the recent link) a lightweight hartail cross country and maybe even a full on downhill bike. ive even been looking at getting an all mountain type bike like the new enduro. my wife said it was her or the bikes.. geez i'll miss her!!!
i suppose i can consider myself lucky then, i am married, have 2 x kids (2.5yr old and 5month old) and a mortgage and i have 4 x bikes
1 x Roadie for weekend long road rides
1 x commuter roadie (fitted with rack, lights etc and commuter friendly tyres)
2 x XC bikes ( 1 main bike and 1 spare for endurance races or friends)
I plan in the future to get a single speed XC bike (for something different)
I have no interest in DH or track riding or bmx riding so will never get any of these style bikes
Might get an all mountain style bike down the track at some point

yes, as a single guy the luxury of having 4 bikes comes at your own discretion -
on Sunday i added to the collection - picked up a Trek session 7 from Clarence St, thanks to Alex for providing the tip on the great deals they were doing.
Which brings the collection to -
1 x Hardtail
2 x XC (both specialized fsr's.. one old / one new)
1 x Freeride / DH.
