Sydney to the Gong 4th Nov 07
Sydney Park, St Peters
ok, i know i will be forever seen poorly amongst the nobmob crew but i do this ride every year and i actually enjoy it.
for those that dont know it is a ROAD ride from St Peters to wollongong. Excellent atmosphere and fairly easy ride with alot of fast downhill sections (think 70-80km/h stuff). I know alot of nobmob crew have road bikes secretly stashed away where noone can see them, pull them out, whack on your secret lycra and come on down. I am in it for fun and wont be trying to break any land speed records, but wont be dawdling either, we can form a few groups depending on numbers and what sort of time you think you can achieve.
SO dont be ashamed, post here if you think you can make it.

MEEE
Better known as...
Road Bike - Check
Lycra - Check
iPod - Check
Depending on the weather, we may be able to round up a few ppl to do the ride back...
That just says it all about scummers!
Come on people, can you not talk and ride at the same time?
Like on today's ride...
My shmick looking "maillot jaune" arrived today from the MS Gong Ride organisers... its pretty good really - if you were considering getting into the spirit of things on the day i'd recommend getting it.
I'm in a work team but still wouldn't mind bunching it down with other Nobmobbers either if anyone's up for it.
Donations anyone?? - http://register.gongride.org.au/?Team+NMI
cheers,
Lance
I've been dragged into a work team for this one. Did it SS last year into the headwind from Hell, might go fixed this year.
Let's say that one needed to go on a long ride this weekend, in prep for the Fling. But perhaps one cannot consider anything too rough, technical or bumpy due to damage sustained last weekend.
Needless to say one doesn't like the idea of being buzzed by d1ckheads in cars and therefore would prefer not to scum, but might have no option.
Theoretically speaking, would this be a good ride to go on for said person in light of all this?
and you have the bike to do it
I am riding with a colleague, not sure of the pace...have to commit today.
Craig
but only because I can't do the Fling next week.
(something about attending a wedding outside Sydney ...)
So what you're trying to say is that:
- You have absolutely no choice but to do the Gong ride or
- Is what you're trying to say is that you would love to do the going ride? or
- You're admitting a partial conversion to the road?
- no choice but to do it....
Just remember to go as early as you can otherwise it will be Majura all over again but not with trees to avoid but with people on their bikes instead.
Lorrie
Well, it would be best to do 50-60Km round the firetrails of Terrey Hills/Ryland/Cascades of course.
But seeing as I'd rather not jeopardise the healing of the hand and that some of our finest seem to be doing this thing it might be amusing to join in is all.
you can tell from the inquisitive tone in his text...
c'mon rob get the entry in..
Go to your local bike shop to enter
http://www.gongride.org.au/ go to "about the ride" then "bike store entry points"
I hope you are all going to wear your new jerseys?
Rob...are you planning on shaving your legs now you have moved over to the Dark Side?!!!!
freaks
Unfortunately I have to pull out of this one...
(Unplanned) family commitments...
Hope you guys have a good one!
probably going to skip this, i have been sick for the last week and only starting to get over it now. Its suppose to rain on Sunday and i dont want to be riding in the rain for 3-4hrs, have to be fully over the flew before the fling.
Don
Have been feeling crook since Thursday and the weather forecast doesn't look good for Sunday.
I'll give it till tomorrow morning to decide if I'm going to bail.
(yes, I'm a big blouse ... une fille grande chemisier)
Ah yes... and just in case the paparazzi were hoping to catch Rob on a scum ride, sorry fellas, won't be happening.
Holes in the leg still not quiet filled so no riding this weekend, scum or not.
Got up this morning at 530am and the sky looked clear and I was feeling OK so I decided to do the ride.
5 minutes into my commute to St Peters and it started raining. Bugger. A rain jacket is one of the cycling clothing items I do not have. Oh well, might as well go for the ride since I was already drenched. I was getting worried about the descents after the Royal National Park and Stanwell Park because I don't do much road riding in the rain. The wet brakes were already being felt.
Anyway, got to St Peters and started on my allocated time of 715am. It was a log jam for the first few kms or so as everyone was more or less pushing their bikes.
Did the ride at a relaxed pace as I was on a bout of self-enforced "tapering" since Thursday (i.e. I was ill). First stop was at Loftus Oval for morning tea. Note to self: road cleats gunk up pretty quickly when walking in a muddy field. The sun had come up by then and there was good weather all the way to the end from there.
Rode on the the Royal National Park. There was a nice climb out of there (I noticed that in the ride profile but I tried to blank it out while on the ride). This ended up at Otard (I think) with a great view of the sea. Then it was on to Stanwell Park and across the sea bridge. The descent to Stanwell Park was terrible. Too many cyclists about so I had to use the brakes a lot. I think I hit 70+ km/h the last time I was there.
The route after that was mostly flat with a few short uphill pinches. I was taking it really easy by this point as I was really feeling the effects of the last 2 days now. We then got off the main road and took suburban streets and cycleways to the finishing point, Stuart Park. A dog ran across one of the cyclepaths into a horde of oncoming cyclists (I think the doggie was trying to emulate its comrades from the Tour de France) but no one got hurt.
Got to the finish, picked up my pre-ordered lunch and lazed about in the sun for a bit. I think my only disappointment of the day was the lunch at the end. I really didn't feel like a salad roll at the end of the ride (though I was told well in advance what it was). I should have got a bacon and egg roll. Or even a kebab from one of the stalls at the park. Mmmmm .... meat ...
All in all, a good day, I'm glad I got up and made the ride. Great views. The climb out of the Royal National Park is worth doing again. And I can now say I have ridden on the road in the rain.
Honourable mentions
- The White Horse Hotel on the Princes Highway. I noticed a sign saying "Chinese-Russian Takeway". Borscht with won tons? Won tons with caviar?
Pelmeni stuffed with char siu?
- The Borat team. A team of cyclists wearing fluoro mankinis.
- The cyclist next to me with a condom wrapped around his cycle computer. I can picture the conversation now. "No dear, that condom you found in my jersey pocket was for keeping my bike computer dry. Honest. I don't get randy on the road/single track"
