1st 3 ringer
My whole intention was just to have fun on this ride and I didnt go out that hard.
Starting out at the back of the pack i realized was a bit of a mistake after getting to the start of the singletrac on the red ring. Must have waited about 10-15 mins just to get riding free again but at least all the riders were in good spirts and passed the time talking with a few riders around us.
Was having a blast on the single trac and i was about 20k into the course and then my rear gearshift broke/fell off. I found the lever again but nothing would get that shifter to work again which left me unable to change the rear derailer. All hopes of having a good time were finished as i now only had 3 gears. At least it broke when my chain was right in the middle of the back gears so it could of been worse.
So The bigest gear on the front wasn't enough to me to get top speed on the downhills, the middle ring was good for the single track but i couldnt climb hills or use it in downhill and of course the smallest ring was only good on little hills, anything else i had to stand up to climb and eventually it got to much and I had to walk a bunch of hills. Learned better technique that way eh?
SO crusing along at what I could and the buddy I was riding with got a flat halfway up the last big hill before the firetrails to the end(11k to go). WHile he was getting a new tube out to change I go to have a drink and lo and behold my bottle was gone(lost on the big downhill before that i guess) Then I try to take a drink out of the hydration pack and that had one sip left. So glad there was only 11k left. i didnt refill as the bottle was full and i knew I wouldnt drink more than that to finish, won't be doing that again.
Well finished up fast and at least passed 20 people on the run to the finish, wish I had all my gears as I reckon I would have been under 330 which is what i was aiming for.
One last thing was when i was getting my gear out of the car when I got home, my rear tyre was flat so I'm glad i didnt have that to add on to the days troubles hahahaha.

Great story, was feeling your pain reading it. That's what makes mountain biking fun. It's the adventure. Bet those roadies don't have much to talk about on their forums
