Kona Stinky - possible purchase and looking for advice

Hi all,

My wife is keen to get into DH and FR after a year of riding XC, and we've come across a 2005 Kona Stinky with an asking price of $1000. It was bought brand new in 2009 (it was in the bike shop for 4 years still in its box in a back storeroom until 2009) and has been well maintained since then. I don't have any knowledge of Kona bikes nor of DH and I was really just after some advice/guidance on whether or not this would be a good purchase, in terms of the bike/model/price etc.

No mods have been made to it, and it appears to be in great nic.

Thanks in advance.... from a DH noob!

My very first bike was a Stinky Deluxe probably a year or so earlier than that one. Awesome bike but technology has changed a lot since. Back then I think it came with 125mm suspension which was your "all mountain" bike. These days they start at 140mm.

I have not ridden a Stinky before, although I have ridden a Stab Superme DH rig at Thredbo which I thought was pretty nice for that purpose.

Not sure how much you know about these bikes, whether it was the style of riding, the bikes, etc. Your wife sounds pretty brave to hit up some DH as its not your typical lady pursuit. Good on her!

Kona are a good brand and make good, solid bikes that are more on the rugged side. Rather than ultra-lightweight flimsy things that seem to be made these days. They don't make 'em like they used to. A Stinky for $1000 sounds like a good deal, although I doubt whether I would get that bike anyway, $1,000 or not. But then again, I am not getting my first bike.

It might also be a good idea if you post the components of the bike as well. Drivetrain, gears, brakes, handlebars, seat/seatpost, etc.

And who is asking/bargaining for that price? You? Or the seller? If they need rid of the bike, you could talk them down another $100-200?
