Garmin compatibility
Looks like my Garmin Forerunner 305 has bitten the dust, started flicking between screens on last nights ride, couldn't do anything with it. Somehow managed to turn it off but now it won't turn on.
I've read some forums that suggest it's probably the internal contacts that have corroded, I could take it apart to find out or I could just buy a 500.
Stupid question time or maybe not, will the cadence and HRM from the forerunner work with the 500?
Cheers

I would say so. My 500 works with the HR strap and cadence sensor that came with my 305.
May still buy the new set so I have the cadence for the mtb. Was trying to be good and not spend too much money on bikes and equipment.
I wouldn't worry about utilising the cadence bit on a mtb but you need the sensor more on a mtb so you get the right distance otherwise it is always a lot shorter relying just on GPS.
The Edge 305 sometimes needs to be reset to turn it on. I can't remember the process exactly but you hold down the Lap/Reset button while you press the ON button.
The ON button is really a "soft" on switch, in other words it tells the software to switch on the display. It's not a "hard" on switch that actually connects the device to the battery.
Sometimes the software plays up and it doesn't "see" the ON switch, so you have to reset the software by doing the little start-up trick.
Do a Google search to verify that I've got the process right.
but it's refusing to come on. I'll have another bash at it tonight.
Avanti plus at narrabeen had edge 500's on special for $260 a week or so ago.

If the GPS is flat you might have to recharge it for a while before it can be reset.
also
You need to hold the buttons down for a few seconds.
I managed to charge it and transfer the data off but all soft and hard resets have failed.
@PS - thanks, some good deals to be had at the moment, cheaper than Wiggle and CRC.
and with local warranty support
Has anyone got one of these yet? Or used the 310xt instead of a dedicated cycle computer?
Might be worth having a look at the Edge 800, a bit pricey, but with the bundle you get (or used to): the HR monitor chest band, cadence sensor, all the built in features - GPS, virtual training partner, web mashups of your rides via google earth/bing, AND FULL TOPO AUS/NZ MAPS - not just roads like your average Car GPS with "push bike" mode. I have had mine for 6 months and no probs at all - had a "regular" trip computer before and the difference is like night and day.
(Disclaimer: I'm just an owner of the Edge 800 - no way affiliated to any shop/distributer/manufacturer)
