The Husky 100ker 2012
The meeting times are 'ready to ride'. If you need time to prepare equipment then please arrive a few minutes earlier.
Callala Beach Road, Callala Beach, New South Wales
Round 4 of 2012 XCM Series
The tranquil waters of Jervis Bay and the township of Callala Beach play host to this classic mountain bike marathon. Only in its second year, "The Husky", as it is affectionately known, has gained wide spread accolades as the most enjoyable, laid-back and achievable marathon on the Australian MTB Endurance Calendar.
Nestled just two short hours from both Sydney and Canberra, THE 100K'er takes advantage of the great single track throughout the Currambene State Forest, the likes of Coondoo, Superbowl, and the Butterfly Track – as well as other fantastic trails in the area. The course provides a great contrast of beach and bush, a bit of sand, a bit of mud, and a whole heap of dirty bliss, all looping back to the start!
All great fun!

The site refuses to give me any info on my password yet wont let me sign in with a new account because i already exist!
To put it really politeley, i'd like to do a big skid on the stupid fíng web designers ugly face!
LOL, my wife is trying to enter as well and the site keeps crashing. At least she knows her password.
After an email to the organizers!
I love/hate technology!
Bring it on boys.
@gazza are you doing the 90 or 100 this year?
I guess it will be wet down there given the amount of rain this year and those big puddles will be nice and full
Hey all
I'm doing the 100ker this year and I am camping at the start line the night before, anyone else doing the same?
Or am I the only nutter camping in the middle of winter..................................
Did invite my wife to join me but she declined for some reason.
No camping for me but I'd say you wont be the only nutter
You cheeky git!
I'll be doing the hundred! If it's only showing 90km on the garmin I'll be riding down the road and back till it gets to the ton!
They better have the track marked better this year after last years cock up!
If it's wet I won't be going down this year. There's no way I'm putting my new pride and joy through the crap of last year!
I'll race whatever the weather, but have grave concerns for the future this event. Its almost inevitable that it'll be delayed.
Its just the area is so low that water sits there forever!
I dont even know the state of the track, but hope it stays dry.
Fingers crossed - I want to race this one - and need a good result to pull me into top 5 or 6 for the series so far...
The first/last section is basically goes through a swamp. Unless it's been ridiculously dry for a long time beforehand it's always going to be somewhat boggy and even then there are some parts that we'll still be wading through. Having said that, the trails over the back are great fun and it's also a great place to hire a house on the beach and take the family for the weekend so I'm in. A bunch of us have a house - ride to start/finish is nice and a proper bar at the finish line that's not half way to nowhere means that it's probably the only chance we've got of having our wives to cheer us over the finish line!
What, push me out of the top 10
Good to see you still have your sense of humor. If you can't rely on your friends to ask these questions who can you rely on?
How come your not racing Nats?
Hope it isnt to wet, I need to get some points full stop, poxy weather runing Canberra and then my injuries.
Long story as to why I'm not there, but looking at the embarrasingly low numbers in the field - I'm not the onyl to have taken a call not to race.
They get more riders at a Western Sydney XC!
100 people in the full marathon. Someone needs to ask some questions.
I was talking to Mike Blewitt about it, MTBA should have been all over this like a bad rash in advertising it, spinning it off from the Real Insurance XCM Series and pushing it hard, its a major failure in my opinion.
There was no info about the course, no profile no nothing up until 3 weeks ago. Maybe the course is to hard for some people.
This is way off the 'Husky' theme, but I wonder whether the advertising is the issue. I know at least 5 top 15 Elite riders who have CHOSEN not to race. I knew it was on (for example). People knew the race was on.
The course was known over 3months ago. Its been kept a secret to most until 3 weeks ago. I think that says enough.
That being said - MTBA are so far from getting it right, on so many things (for example the All Mountain Cup this year at the XC series) that noone is really surprised.
Huw Kingston (Wild Horizons) names the Highland Fling as the Aussie Marathon Champs. It doesnt carry UCI points, but thats the only thing about it that points towards it not being the champs. Its the one race that everyone wants to win.
Anyway - back to Husky...
I'm confused. Course too hard for some people? Only 100 people in the full marathon? Is this all in relation to the Husky?
A recent email blast had the event 80% full. I thought this was one event that iAdventure were successful with. Mind you, with all this rain I am seriously questioning the likelihood of a) the event being on, and b) me going.
Logan hijacked this thread talking about the race in Canberra on the weekend
Was, wasnt intentional.
So this is my first time doing the Husky & I'm wondering what the trails are going to be like given all of this recent weather. Does the area drain well or will it be a wet & muddy bog-fest? What sort of tyres will be suitable?
They hold water nicely.
After being postponed last year as it was too wet there are some pics in my blog of my bike after it.

Does anyone have an update on the condition of the course?
They say they will be looking at draining the big bog holes and expect a fast course
http://www.rotorburn.com/forums/showthread.php?2...
I have 2 50km entries to flog - full fair before the deadline was $105 each, I'll sell'm for $75 each, it's an extra $30 on the day to change the rider.
Has anyone had any correspondence re the rider breifing and our race numbers. Thanks
$70 ONO, http://nobmob.com/node/36448
Rider brief now posted. Also a few rider catorgry changes to match cyclenation
of beating my Number plate, got plate 6...Good times.
Still looking dryish down there dispite the rain in Sydney.
Just gotta get rid of this bad back!
Should be good down there. Chance of rain is now low
Logan, you'll be under 6 hours?
It should be a good day.
Here are some of my thoughts captured in an interview with Marathon MTB.....

One other comment - that non elite riders wont have noticed - for the Elite, they are offering to take water bottles out to the feed stations - standard. What is odd, is that they have explicitly stated that they wont be bringing water bottles back.
It is one of the oddest decisions / rulings that I have come across. I wonder whether they will just leave them in the forest, on a table, as a permanent shrine to the race.
So odd.
Yeah I saw that, maybe they expect you to ride back after the race and get them?
As if 100km wasnt enough!!
I think that I'll be donating them to the water-bottle gods...
No doubt to pop up on someones bike in the next race I attend. I always name / initial my bottles, so it will be clear who benefits from the donation!! So funny.
Maybe they plan on auctioning them after the race?
I haven't ridden my mtb since dirtworks so I thought I better check over it. That's now done. Can't wait for Saturday morning to come around.
Noticed that as well Ants, cant understand it either. Granted its only bottles but how hard is it going to be put all the bottles in a box and bring them back at the end?
They better mark the bloody track better this year also!
Maybe the water bottle thing is they'll bring them back to the start but they will not get them to you and you will need to get them.
Can't wait! I'll be the lone guy on one wheel so feel free to say hi if you see me (or pass me). I'll only be doing the 50km's this time around. See ya'll there.
Cheers,
Jamey
Some pretty good results by Nobmobers today - @antsonline 5th in a sprint finish where all of the top 5 crossed the line together (he'll be down on himself being a couple of bike lengths from from 1st place but that guy is now close to winning these events); @ Gazza about 20th outright (bet he wasn't on his cyclocross!); @dicko not far behind him.
I wasn't there due to a chest infection but judging by the times it must have been a little damp. Look forward to hearing the stories.
Is one way of putting it.
The bog holes were a joke, just as well there werent any midgets racing, they would of drowned in some of those creek crossings.
Will post up a blog shortly.
Yeah, nice to see Gaz, Brian, Wayne and Mike all finishing strong.
@andy, Husky is always like that. In 2010 it was dusty on the fire roads but they still had just as many bogs that you had to walk. At least this year a lot were rideable or you could get round them cleanly.
Hey Andy
I don't see you in the official results? http://www.multisportaustralia.com.au/RaceTecRes...
Where'd you place?
So not in the general Cat.
Check my blog post, it was a long day in the office, but official 20th in elite mens and a time of 05:52:41.
My bad, didn't spy that the category was kept seperate from the General results. I thought there were a few of the usual suspect names missing.
One hell of a race.
Bike is ruined.
I've written some thoughts - as usual...
http://nobmob.com/node/36595
I hope you enjoy. It was a good day out. Well done to everyone (and their bikes!) that finished.
hey guys, I did the 50km race, and it was great, plenty of slippery bits to keep you on edge, and lots of mud to smash through!
Got a bit frustrated with people slowing/stopping for the small bogs/puddles, and I probably started 2 waves too far back had a few people to pass, but I always start slow.
did a 2hr 32min, and was stuffed for the last 1km along the golf course, 81st overall, pretty dam happy with that.
I am trying to find where any photos are going to be shown/sold, any ideas?
Hey Guys,
I had a great time racing with all of you two wheelers, thanks for letting me join in on the fun and not getting too mad at me if I slowed you down at all. I was pretty happy with my results, 3 hours 20 minutes, coming 231st out of 322 people that finished the 50km. And that all done on one single 26" Kris Holm Schlumpf Unicycle (Schlumpf means 2 gears in the hub but fixed-no coasting). Kinda wishing I did the 100km...maybe next year.
