Well after 4 months of waiting... The new ride has arrived, only to be pulled apart and made to look - well - different.
When it comes to racing, the tyres will be swapped over to proper tyres... The red bling can stay...

When I was looking for my last bike this came well into the frame. The main issue was that I couldn't wait as long as I was going to need to get one! Have they just become available now or you were just waiting for yours? Really happy with the Epic but be great to hear how it goes.

The 2's arrived a couple of weeks ago. The 1's only a few days ago. There's not many at all around and the next batch will get here in a month or so i believe.

Now I have heard of "oversize tubes" but that takes the cake - no breaking this one Mr Flash!
It was only a basic ride, but still enough to figure out a few differences... Rolls very fast. Rolls over obsticles (and down stairs) very well. It does have a pretty short wheelbase by 29er standards so quite nimble still. The bars are nearly 150mm wider than my 26er! Now that feels very different. Not uncomfortable, just different.
I actually feel like a kid thats "borrowed" my dads mountain bike! Would love to fang it around duck holes and centre track for a comparsion between wheel sizes, feel etc. But looking at the ongoing, seemingly endless storms and rainfall outside the window at the mo... That could be a while...
Might just have to wear out the nobbles riding out to west head instead...

On another note. I caught up with Mr GiantNut this arvo to compare some of the geometry between his uber pimped Anthem X29 and the scalpel.
Similar overall wheelbase, but the Scalpel seemed to have a slacker head angle.
The Scalpels rear axle seemed around 4-5" closer to the overhang of the seat.
The Anthem looked like a bit of spaghetti compared to the Scalpel. (i dont mean that in a bad way, i mean it in such a way that most bikes are going to look like soaghetti compared to the seriously oversized everything on the scalpel)
Heres the big bit of info. In current setup, they are pretty much the same weight! Which means pretty soon, a Giant Nut will come and scream past you on the trails! Glad he's on my team for the Mont!
I'm envious. I like the Black & White livery too. What is the brake and drivetrain specs?
love the curves, but the single front fork still freaks me out!!!
Drive is still standard (sram xx) with the exception of the red and black chain and bolts. Brakes are 2012 Sram X0 (avid). Not sure why they didnt use XX, maybe it was the different rotor sizes (180 front 160 rear). Im sure others might have the answer.
Oh and if anyone was wondering...
I went for the Black and white look, including whitewalls (havent built up a complete white wheelset yet) because i really liked the look of the Corratec Air tech Revolution (white wheels, frame, tyres etc). I know i know, its all going to get real dirty real fast...

Certainly looks different! Im guessing its the angle of the photo, but the bars look a tad high. Have you got the position dialled yet? I noticed I went from a 26er to a 29er, the saddle to handlebar drop went from 11cm drop to 5cm, even with the -17deg stem. Certainly feel as though im sitting more "in" it rather than "on" it. Maybe yours have ended up more level than compared to your 26in?

PS. I hate to do a pit stop time test fixing a flat on the front. Me with QR15, and you with the lefty! Id still be unwinding the thru-bolt while your pumping up your new tube!
I havent had a chance to put it through its paces yet. So finding the right position will evolve. I tend to have my seatpost quite high which surprised the bike shop. But youre right with the description of the difference. I feel like im part of the bike on the 29er, whereas on the 26" i feel like im sitting up high, perched ontop.
Now as for the flat tyre, yep i'd probably have it whipped off and ready to go again before youve unwound your thru bolt... But then id have to ride a few more laps, as youve already finished...
On another note, how wide do you have your bar set up? Mine are currently 700mm, but may end up with something closer to 660mm.

I run 600mm flat bars on my 29er. I ran the same on my 26" for a little bit but have changed back to the 660mm riser bars as it suits it better for what it is. The narrow bars on the 29er feel good as its a longer cockpit and more like my roadie.
I was using 660mm on the spark 26, but the scale 29 came with 690mm. Bar ends bring my hands in about 15mm each side so I'm back to the 660mm.
I havent found them to be too wide except for when I got caught on a tree at wingello last weekend.
the handle bars do look high in the original pic - kinda like a hybrid.... But no, that's just the lense playing tricks and maybe a slight angle on the bike... Also - i just noticed ur new ride is a hardtail... not a dually. What were ur reasons for leaning that way??
I run my bars stock on my 26ers at 685mm. The reasons are twofold.
* wider means I'm more likely to clip trees on narrow singletrack like Kiwarrak and Jurassic Park at Ourimbah (or maybe I just need to HTFU and lean the bike over more). And then you have to negotiate the two creek bridges at Manly Dam.
* narrower used to make it difficult to get the levers positioned where I like them for 1-finger braking even with the single-clamp Dual Control setup. The Easton bars I'm now using are an improvement as the centre bulge isn't as wide as say FSA, but I've kind of grown to like them where they are.
