is the goods John?
Nice to meet you yesterday.
Sorry I didn't carry on down the 19th hole but after talking to you prior I thought it better to stop and scope it out before attempting, esp. since it was Chris' first visit to the dam. In the end I think it's been worse but since it's had a good few dry days it's better than a few weeks ago.
Great videos by the way, keep em coming.
That was fun! It looks quite different from what I remember though, perhaps the lens is wider but the track looks narrower.
Love the comment for the chaps coming the other way.
Good to put face to name. No worries about peeling off, I figured that's why you did and commend you for taking care of your mate.
The landing at the bottom of 19th was still pretty atrocious last weekend - there were a few tyre tracks where people had strayed left off-line and their front wheel had come to an obvious sudden stop in the soft brown mud while the rest of them continued.
*Much* better yesterday. Lets hope the fine weather continues for a few more weeks.
@ladytoast, the lens is a wide angle 170 degrees. Yes, the track has become a bit more closed-in in places, especially the bermed twisty bits.
Next up will be my first run of the day from 19th Hole to the hydro lab.
Edit: here it is:

Nice videos but you really need to work on you line choice which will help you increase your speed!
A bit of huffing and puffing there John, see you for an early morning ride sometime soon?! In all fairness, I always forget what a work-out the Dam is when I haven't been there for a month or so and then ride it with a bit of urgency. There's enough for the legs but also a bit for the upper body to do as well. Three or four laps of the Dam is seriously good for the fitness levels!
But I agree. I definitely wasn't flowing around there like I was last year. I was running into things I should have been floating over, and line choice was less than ideal in a lot of places. I won't be putting up footage of my run through the Trig Track - too embarassing!
The 19th Hole vid was from my first lap for the day (first for seven months, actually) so I was really focussed on seeing where everything was and keeping the rubber side down rather than trying to ride fast. The place changes so much it's my policy to treat the first circuit as a "sighting in" lap and to put any thought of trying to be quick out of my head. Unfortunately I've learned the hard way on that one.
The Dam works your core and upper body so much more than equivalent distances at Terrey Hills, and my Mont preparation definitely suffered for the lack of k's there this year. Looking forward to riding there more, hoping the weather cooperates.
Goals for this year are to be quick enough to make it into the 30's, and to have the stamina and skill to safely negotiate both sets of the techy step-ups that follow after the end of the Golf Course vid.
Safety first, though.
Yeah, I safely negotiated my arse down the second step up yesterday. No scratches on the bike, and my bark will grow back soon enough..... the shame and embarrasment however
No need to defend your line choice hawkeye, it looked fine to me.
All to easy for others to make those sort of comments from behind a keyboard (you should have attempted all three sets of steps at the end of vid one though )
Not hiding behind a keyboard LadyToast!
I ride the dam atleast twice a week and finished 2nd overall in Vets at State and National level in Downhill so I know a thing or two about line choice!
His lines were ok but there are some far better ones down to the 19th hole!
Spill the beans, then
Come for a ride! Lines are best shown on the track!
There are quite a few lines around the Dam they are easily ridden that are far far better/faster than just the normal line!
is that why the trail is getting wider and also straighter?
Ride the dam a fair bit and do take some different lines to those int he video but I'm are not perfect. Why not post up a ride and if people are interested in improving their lines they can tags along?
me to do a quick lap this afternoon.I havent been for a few months and its amazing how much the trail features have changed in that time.Obviously all that rain caused alot of erosion as some of the climbs were more difficult with all the extra exposed rocks.the downhill section is fun though, especially with 165mm of travel....
I watched the videos before going to bed last night, big mistake. Had stupid dreams of riding Manly Dam and needing to fix the problem areas. Hell, I've only been there once and that was over a year ago!
I would be up for a ride looking at different lines. I get accused of taking interesting/different lines so keen to see some more (both faster and more fun).
did you tell them how much work has gone into your body with operations & physio & you are out there for fun & not the speed ...
