+10 for Rotorua
Heard a lot about Rotorua recently, went there few years ago (as a tourist only) and loved it.
Next time I'll go there, definitely I'll have my bike.

There is a video about Rotorua's trails: http://www.pinkbike.com/news/trailnotes-video-it...

Cant compare Queenstown and Rotorua but i have been to rotorua and its something special... I was in new zealand on holiday and couldn't help but hire a bike. But i have heard all over new zealand are great trails. I think either way your not going to want to ride in australia ever again after Sticking out tongue

BC. Tell you about it soon.

Depends on what you want to ride, Rotorua has an amazing over 100km of single track in one forest alone and a few other places to ride XC. Queenstown has cool riding but the gondola is only open 8 months a year for Mountain bikers (closed over winter) and this is more DH orientated. Queenstown also has some pretty cool XC tracks but they would be insanely cold to ride in winter.

So to put it simply, I'd go to Rotorua for XC and Queenstown for DH.

Rotorua has very sweet single track. Wellington also has lots of fantastic single track. Have a look at Makara Park.

leave Queenstown for summer and do Rotorua if you're heading off soon.

I posted the same question earlier this year http://perthmtb.asn.au/node/33600 and ended up going to Rotorua for 10 days in April.
In short, Awesome.
I stayed there http://www.alpin.co.nz/ and rode from the motel everyday. The owner is also a keen Mountain biker and extremely helpful.
Pick a time when the shuttle is running, it will allow you to explore more of the amazing track collection they have there.
I found that website the most helpful http://www.kiwibikes.co.nz/rotorua/
Hired a car for one day and went exploring lake Taupo and the W2K track (fantastic).

And from my own experience, adjustable seat post and yellow lenses are a must for Rotorua.

And next year, Queenstown...

if going to Queenstown it's worth riding Christchurch too.

Ride Victoria Park and rest of Port Hills, formalized in 1990's by Council, Parks and private land owners. See Council website. Also worth riding Craigieburn near Arthurs Pass. They do shuttle days at Mt Hutt too.

Then drive south 5.5 hours to Queenstown. Awesome drive. Can hire a trailer for 10 bikes from Natural High and drop it off in other cities. [email protected]

Trip in Late November early December . . . . .

Would that change the general consensus of Rotorua?

lol

Hopefully this will be the hardest decision I have to make this year!

lol

Thanks guys!

Rotorua is just utterly fanatastic however if you can drag yourself away from there and road trip there is lots and lots of fantastic riding elsewhere in NZ.

Its a hard choice what approach to take because the density and amount of quality at Rotorua is just so high.

Is it lift assisted climbing or pure pedal power you are after.

If your there to get as many descending miles as possible and you won't have a shuttle crew then Q-Town in Summer.

If its about access to as many grin worthy trails via pedalling then Roto-vegas has to be the best use of your week.

Also depends if your bringing family you need to distract or just riding buddies.

Go to Rotorua.
If you are there during summer months then the shuttle runs all day on the weekends and also Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
there are miles of trails for all abilities, the forest is just amazing too. All an easy pedal from the main town.
If for some dumb reason you get sick of the trails, there are plenty of other things to keep you occupied around town also.
and dont forget, you can fly direct to Rotorua from Sydney in 3.5 hours twice a week with AirNZ. What's not to like?

There's also some great day trips out of Rotorua as well. its easy to spend a day or two around Lake Taupo (1 hr away) and there are some great point to point trails

A group of 14 of us flew across earlier this year and got taken to some amazing places on some incredible trails. We had a guide who organised everything - food, accomodation, transport, hire bikes, etc, etc. He took us to places that only a local would know - and many of the trails he had a hand in building. This was by far the absolute best way to do it - good bunch of blokes and a guide to take us to the best places to ride. We rode trails in Queenstown, Wanaka and Alexandra and stayed in each of the towns.
So, if you have a group going (ours was quite a big group - smaller ones can be accommodated as well!), contact Phil at Altitude Adventures - http://www.altitudeadventures.co.nz/

That Altitude Adventures sound nice. Did you do the 'Central Otago Freeride – Singletrack 4 Day Tour' ?
