Downhill clipped in or not?

Hey everyone. Just getting into mountain biking. The path I'm taking is mainly downhill stuff. My local is The Pines in Margs. Also I like the Pemberton downhill tracks. Lots of berms and fast flowing jumps. Currently I've got flat peddles and looking for some mountain biking shoes. I'm using cheap skate shoes at the moment but find they are getting trashed very quickly. Are most downhill riders riding clipless? Just need to know before I go out and buy some shoes. Had my eye on some Loius Garneau Tera Lites. Flat soles but able to use cleats if needed. Here is the link. http://www.louisgarneau.com/in-en/product/305575...

Hey Greenroom - good to see you are finding some time on land. Eye-wink

Anyway, I think there are two schools of thought on this - its a 'religious' issue:

http://forums.mtbr.com/29er-components/clipped-p...

Personally, I like/have ridden clipped SPDs all my life. I can't imagine how one could prefer anything else. But then I never grew up on a BMX. I find it makes it easier to control the back end of the bike - hopping logs etc - and gives a secure feel when smacking through rock gardens.

I have a pair of shoes just like those Garniers and they work fine (cost me $60 - no need to go top end unless you are a XC racer).

That said, many DHs go for flats like 5 10s :

Hope that helps.

A shoe similar to what your looking at would be a good option as you could use both types of pedals. +1 for 5 10's. They have a sturdy sole and leather upper that will take a pounding. I wouldn't go for anything with a mesh upper as you will shred them in no time.

FlyingTomato's picture

It's a safety decision..

There's a mix out there of who uses flats v clips. But it depends on your skill and the types of trails you ride.

If you're just beginning then i would definitely not recommend clip ins for down hill.. but then again i dont know the trails you're riding so it could be ok.

For my XC bike i would use clip ins for sure as generally you're going slower and have more time to unclip in the event of a stack before going over.

For DH there is no way in hell i would be clipped in to my bike because when im barreling down a steep descent and if i come unstuck.. i want to be able to leap off the bike should i need to and hopefully land on my feet or at least use them to break my fall.
not to mention its always good to be able to put a foot out mid corner to just prop yourself up when sliding through.

Eye-wink spend a while on pinkbike and you can judge how many riders are clipped in.

Hey Marvin. Yeah when there is no wind and no surf I find the bike fits in perfect. I was able to get the LG's for $125. Haven't got them yet. The other option I thought was real good were the Shimano AM45's. But seeing that the 5 10's are popular I wouldn't mind trying a few on. Will be up in Perth on Saturday. Any bike shops stock these shoes? And thanks for the help. I'm Definately going clipless. I like the freedom and ability to drop a leg at the scariest of moments hahaha. Jumping and freeriding is what I'm into too.

Greenroom's picture

5 10 Barrons is what I'm after. Are these stocked in Perth?

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?M...

The other is the Shimano AM45s but not that keen on velcro. Would it last?

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?M...

Thanks for your help everyone.

Flynny's picture

Said it before, I'll say it again. I can get my foot off a clipless pedal quicker than I can get it off a grippy platform pedal, especially with 510s.

Getting it back in can bit a little slower.

And lets face it if you are stacking a DH bike the type of pedal is going to have little effect on your getting hurt. Unless of course it's the spikey platform pedal taking chunks out of your shin or calf...

Go with what you are comfortable with

I have a wide foot and find the Shimano AM45s are nice and comfortable. Never had a problem with the velcro.

Never tried the Barrons but the Minnaars are good too

Both places you mentioned aren't really downhill tracks. Pemberton is an XC track and the Pines in margs is a normal XC trail. For both of those and other trails similar I'd be looking at clipped in but if you were looking at real DH trails on DH bikes (Welli Mills, Nannup, Dwellingup etc etc) then it is a different question.

badchef's picture

no one can really tell you what to wear, that is up to you,but if its opinions you are after then here is mine,i ride dh ocassionally,in the sport class so im not very good, but i ride clips on most dh tracks that dont have big rockgardens, and flats that do have aline only rockgardens, having said that i have ridden nannup, dwelli, welli, and margs in clips and enjoyed it more than flats,i do all my trail riding in clips so dh feels more natural in clips.i think hiways cycles still has 5 10 in store and they have a good range of shimano clip shoes too,as do midland cycles, go with what feels most natural, good luck and go hard

Marvin's picture

Good to hear GR.

With shoes its try before you buy I reckon. So many different lasts and shoes that don't fit are expensive.

These guys are the dealers and they say a couple of places in Perth plus one in Albany for five tens - might be worth a few phone calls:

At the expense of this becoming an advert, i would advocate 510's for both situations, clipped and unclipped, a set of crank brothers mallets and a set of decent flats. To me changing pedals for ride is as integral as the extensive discussions on what tyre to wear and which wheel size is best. this decision will change how bike and you perform for minimal expense really.

I have 4 510s and i am getting buried in them. the best ones are my carpet baggers. thay are like the best most comfortable slipper/desert boot with a quick relase velco strap to tie feet in and again the sole that some have gone back to flats for as it is in 90 percent situations as good as being clipped in. i can wear them to work in cbd, to any pub and then steal a bike out the front of said pub and smash a line home. Minaars rock, there are a black chaeper version and then the lace up fluro zebra green free style.

They are without doubt the best MTB shoe on the market period, and I owned 10 plus sets of Vans and converse and everything. its the next level of shoe, interesting to see if the Adidas ownership changes anything. Why advocate the 510's with the clips on a big body pedal a la mallet is two reasons. its surprising how much when realy pushing it and you deliberately clip out you can use the full 510 grip in the face of the mallet platform and its just as per normal bmx, you are not clipped but not loosing anything or trying to get "back in". The other reason is that when mates call and the bike is wearing mallets and you cant be stuffed putting the 510s with the cleats on, grab the carpet baggers and can still bolt to pub and pull a few swifty kerb jumps without the recessed cleat of the crank bros being in way.

I have also had an idea and its probably all ready out there. we have lock out forks, handle bar mounted suspension and seat adjustments etc. What about handlebar mounted cleat relaease. Think it, smashing a garden and instead of precautionary like twisting a shoe out or to rail a big berm, press button and feet released, press when foot back on and back in. if no one has thought it i have registered it.

Anyone want to smash the JF DH runs tomorrow am with this rain?

I would love to see the cable routing for that. Smiling

I am doing the mundairing runs with a mate tomorrow. Pm me if you are keen. More the merrier.

pmd - cheers

Greenroom's picture

Thanks heaps for all your opinions. That's what I was after.
The Pines I'm only interested in the DH sections. Jumps and berms. I usually walk back up.
Pembie I like Cool Runnings and the wooden berms track.
Keen to get some 5 10's as this is probably the way I want to go with my riding.
What size shoe are you Gonzo and where would I go to get them? I have called a few places and no one seems to stock them.
Hi ways don't, Malaga doesn't and Albany is like 4 hours away Laughing out loud
Any help would be appreciated.

GonzoRacing's picture

evryone has got rid of them cause all buying on the net. but here is an idea (from memory i am size 10.5 oz shoes and i bought size 43.....if i am wrong dont blame me), but 510 make great running and hiking shoes also and they are stocked in the major mountain type shops on hay street perth. wonder on in down there, pretend you are walking the bibbulmen and should geta feel for it. good luck. there has to be something on the web with a conversion chart?

again, every one of my 10s has just felt so good, i sleep in them

GonzoRacing's picture

Somewhere in this post this various track is described as this type of track, and then that type of track. As though someone has the right to classify a track and for ever and a day its that as per some bible. tracks a track, its the type of track depending on how the individual decides to ride it. dont let yourself be pigeonholed by some criteria, be free tracks, be free. you are for one purpose, to ride.

hate the disparaging classification system imposed on the individual.

real DH trails - why was this statement neccessary, to correct someone on your personnal perceptions about manning up.

those about to ride salute you.

burn the bible

Greenroom's picture

Ya mun. I agree Gonz. I like to ride DH and as far as I was aware Pemberton was DH? Cool Runnings and the wooden berms track seemed DH to me.
Same with The Pines. Fast DH sections with slight up hills back to the starts. I usually walk the up hill parts and give the DH sections shiz! HA!
Anywho thanks I'm off to mountain design for sizing. Gotta love that Bib track hehehe.

Scratchy's picture

You been drinking again Gonzo?

Real as in they are actually used for competition Downhilling IE State DH races.
Pemberton is used at a state level as an XC race track.

Don't stress it too much Greenroom, as long as the shoe fits, wear it.

GonzoRacing's picture

at that keyboard

see ya soon scratchy

Scratchy's picture

The money supplied for the Pemberton contract and the tender put out was for a IMBA blue grade XC loop IIRC. A professional trail builder was contracted to build the XC loop.

Don't stress it too much Greenroom glad you're enjoying the ride.

Please keep this on topic.

GonzoRacing's picture

An individual has identified their riding at a particular physical location as a particular style. You came in and chastised them, stating the "real" category. You earn a physical income from mtbing and are thus an advocate with an agenda.

This needs to be disclosed at every post. Through your publication you have pushed an agenda throughout. You also sit on WAMBA membership of committee, and thus as a publicist could be seen as having a conflict of interest.

Please dont be condescending of persons posts re their type of writing. Fuck the State rounds. Its like being a food critic who never mucks in unless there is personal monetary benefit.

Regarding my drinking and your posting on this web site, then demanding further posts stay "on topic", what a fucking hypocrite. Never been much for lawyers anyway, lets sort this out the old fashioned way eh?

You blokes are funny. It's all good.
I just wanna get my hands on some bloody Five Tens!

allmountaintrails's picture

Gonzo. I think you should get off this forum if you are going to use language like that. There is no need to swear to get your point across and this site is also used by children. I don't want my kids to see that sort of stuff written here. I want to encourage them to be part of the scene which you are making bad.

Flynny's picture

Have to agree. The only thing I saw in scratchy's post was him pointing out that for the trails suggested clipless pedals would be a fine choice.

The subsequent rant and personal attack by gonzo was just a bit sad really.

Seems you two have some history out side the forum. How about leaving it there?

marto71's picture

i really cant agree, gonzo was simply offering advice, when he was accused of drinking, obviously he has the right to defend himself as it was scratchy who made the first personal attack, i dont know either of them but for what its worth, you can ride any bike on any trail even if it is an xc trail, we all need to start some where, as for on topic, i used clip ins for DH, but later changed to five tens, only thing i missed was being able to control the bike in the air, same as when i raced bmx, clips are good for bike control, but i found five tens to be better for me, look at it this way, if clips are not for you, then you can always flog them off on ebay

badchef's picture

if you have trouble getting 510 shoes locally you could try tbsm, its not local but atleast its still in oz,i wear 45 euro in shitmano shoes and 10.5 in 510 low cuts,i chose the half size because the toe does get a bit narrow for my foot so the 10.5 fits nice, good luck finding your shoes, sorry bout the bum steer on hiways, they used to always have em

badchef's picture

geez scratchy you know how to push peoples buttons, after last years forum wars(which was a result of your particpation in 3 different posts, on 2 websites)i thought you would of pulled your head in,doesnt pissing off half the sw mtbers tell you something?and now its gonzo,to claim he is on the turps in an open forum is a bit personal,im not surprised by his personal insult toward you, surely any trail going down a hill with jumps, berms drops etc could be called downhill?at one point margs had a 4m gap jump, i havent seen an xc trail with one,a better tip might be to point greenroom to the trail section on this forum to find the sanctioned dh trails in his reigon, lets keep personal insults off the open threads

I apologise for this and the spawning of the posting's. If you look closely I baited you by advocating to burn your publication, and that probably led to you calling me on my drinking.

I understand your resonse. I did not expect to have my drinking problem identified, but now laid bare for the world to see, it must be achnowledged. I find it difficult to drink and ride and despite burning out a few camelbacks, its still there.

Sorry.

I am sorry i swore on the post in response. There is no excuse. I too dont want my kids exposed to this.

I am also sorry that I posted a track that has caused anguish. I understand that, sorry. I agree it needs work and I need to man up. It has been removed.

Having spent my weekend in Adelaide here is whats going on there. I know you dont care. In response to your direct enquiry, no physical harm meant, but when we do meet I expect a very robust discussion, or a somewhat reciprical response.

Regards
Rob

Hows it, funny who you come across on forums. This thread is starting to look like something from seabreeze.

We need an Arguments section in the forum. And an Abuse one as well.

Actually, I like the carbon tax. Nothing wrong with promoting a cleaner world.

Greenroom's picture

Hey everyone I'm glad we have sorted it out hehehe.
Thanks for the tips. Managed to get some Five Tens from ChainReaction.
Let's see how they fit and go.

Jaredp's picture

I am looking at the Minnaars but I am unsure of fit and quality.

Cheers.

Greenroom's picture

The Five Ten Barron's in 42 aren't in stock for another couple of weeks.
Thinking the Minnaar's or the Hellcat's. They look similar? Just different colour. Any thoughts?
Here is a noob question for everyone. What is SPD? I'm guessing it's got something to do with cleats? Also the bit on the sole with the 2 screws comes out and you put your cleats in there right? And if you want to go flats you just screw the flat bit back in?

Zoom's picture

SPD is the standard Shimano type cleats. They come in different angles of movement. The model with number SH11 in it is the one I use.
