Suggestions on a cheap SS road/cross with drop bars and mech discs

I am in need of a new commuter. I am thinking a road/cross geometry frame and fork, with drop bars, mechanical discs, threaded bottom bracket and single speed.

Id rather not, but chain a tensioner may be acceptable if it doesnt have horizontal drop outs.

Any suggestions?

Cheers!

Just buy a full blown CX bike and be done with it.
It's one more way to have a blast on a bike.
( and you know all the cool kids are doing it now Eye-wink )

Merida have a great CX Bike.105 all over. Nothing flash but pretty good.

I bought a Kona Honky Inc for commuting. Perfect for me, disks, drop bars, pannier rack out back, I'm very happy with it. I did look at CX bikes, but were a little more than I wanted to spend on a commuter - not many with discs either.

thanks for the suggestions. the charge mixer without the gears looks like a possible option. a second hand one would be even better.

Take a look at the Orbea flatbar roadys. They have single speed and discs brakes options. Just put a set of drop bars on it and you're away.

I'm going the other way. I've got a roady for commuting, but want disc brakes and want to ditch the drop bars as I never use them. So got myself (well waiting for it to arrive at my LBS) a carbon hardtail and going to build a set of mavic open pros on Hope Pro2's that I have. Got to get a set of carbon rigid forks then assemble it with all my spare bits that I have lying around. Only hoping that I can run roady chainrings on this frame. Advantage is I can swap the forks for my spare fox 32s, wack on my XT wheels and I'll have a great hardtail. Smiling
