I think former Aussie coach Damien Grundy said it best on FB. It should not be about whether MTB and BMX should be included but why the historic track event should not have been dropped.
Personally I think BMX is prefect for the Olympics and it's TV audience.
MTB less so. Xc is soooo hard to capture well on TV, and lets face it that is what the lympics and its dollars really care about. On TV the XC events we've had so far at the games have looked odd. TV makes it look like a) they race down dirt rds so sre just the guys nt fast enough for road racing or b) they race really slow around a flat single trail.
MTB riders no that's not true and the camera doesn't do it justice but how do outsiders see it?
It will be interesting to see how the made for TV London track goes and what riders and TV spectators think of it.
I say include BMX and XC if you must but not at the expense of the track events. Get rid of anything that requires a judge instead.
He's off my christmas card list
I don't agree that the Olympics are not the pinnacle of BMX and XC racing. Jared Graves and Caroline Buchanan did not switch from 4X to BMX to race the world champs, they wanted to be at the Olympics. If anything the road race is the cycling event that is not the pinnacle.
It still sucks that the 1km track race is gone, that was my favourite event to watch. It would be much better to get rid of soccer where the Olympics is an under 23 competition so most of the world's best players are not even there.
I think the track is boring zzzzzzzzzzzzz so boring that I want to go to sleep... good night zzzzzzzzzz.
Did you watch the Worlds in Melbourne?
Chris Hoy's ride in the Kerin to take Gold was unreal, Hoy was 4 riders back and there looked like there was no way through coming out of the final corner, somehow he got down underneath the Kiwi and moved him across and took Gold. Cameron Meyer to lap the field to win the Points Comp, was fantastic as well.
Tell that to Ryan Giggs
Each soccer team is allowed three exceptions to the under 23 rule.
Agreed Flynny, I think the track events should have remained but good to see XC and BMX there. Wish DH was there too.
Good to see the Olympics still making an effort to remain current and relevant. Don't think many of us would be into the old events a few thousand years ago coated with olive oil and running around naked.
Personally I'm just hanging out for Rampage 2012 in October! Maybe one day this will be included too.
only good thing about track cycling is the stacks!!!!
Re: DH, I hope it stays well clear of the lympics. It's bad enough that an out of touch UCI runs the show with out having to panda to a money focused IOC too )
I guess what I was meaning is that the Olympics are supposed to celebrate the pinnacle of sport and atheticism.
The money made for TV focus shows how much things have gone wrong.
