Prescription Riding Glasses
Having given up on contacts which irritate me too much, I'm in the market for some prescription riding glasses.
I've noticed a few people wearing them and wondered if anyone had any good experiences in getting something reasonably priced, not too flash, that don't steam up too easily.
Thanks in advance,
Matt.

Hi Matt,
Unfortunately i don't have anything great to say (in my experience) I have moved back to some adidads all singing all dancing sunnies... non-prescription glasses. After mucking around with two sets of prescription arnettes.
Prescription sunnies are definitely more expensive than normal sunnies, and if you want ones with different lenses say one yellow and one dark tint well that could cost a few hundred dollars minimum.
Check with the optometrist about the compatibility of lenses to prescriptions, the more wrap around they are the less chance they have of being a prescription.
Sorry i couldn't be of much more help...

Matt, I have tried different brands of contact lenses, some of which irritated my eyes severely, some that didn't. I have found that the daily lenses (the really really soft ones) to be the best for me. I wear them for everything - bike riding, basketball - and they are excellent. Maybe if you shop around, you could get different types of lenses that might mean you don't need prescription sunnies?
I'm not a prescription glasses wearer but the name that comes up over and over again when this question is asked is Rudy Project. Although they probably don't fit the requirements of reasonably priced and not too flash

The Rudy's look great, now to find out how much they cost... cheers.
Liam - Thanks for the contacts info, I was using the daily ones myself and they were pretty porous, but one out of every 4 or 5 times they would feel like I'd scratched my eye and be very irritating, besides they're not cheap if you're using them two or three times a week. I reckon a pair of glasses will save me money over the long haul.
Ta,
Matt.
Man, did you see that RP catalogue? That is some serious eye bling. I doubt that any of those will come cheap.
Just remember, your eyewear is going to get scratched and dirty. Or, like in Paul's case, it will fall off a car roof and get run over by a car. For me, there is no sense buying expensive glasses if they are going to break or get scratched up in a week. I would just end up feeling dirty over my purchasing decision.
Given I don't want contacts and would like to see detail on the trail then glasses are the only choice, focus (sigh...) on the topic people. They won't get scratched if they stay on your head, I've ridden a lot with normal glasses and never had a scratch. If they were cheap quality and poorly made then they probably would scratch and break easily but I doubt anyone would buy them if they only last a week...
Now back to my Yogic eye exercises to stop me needing them in the first place ;-}
Ta,
Matt.
Bolle 'Piraja' for day riding and Nike (not sure on model) for night riding (I have a narrow face so my choices are limited as to which frames fit my face) & I love them. As mentioned, RP are also great glasses i.e. good design for the appropriate air flow, but having said that, a strenuous ride will tend produce a bit of "Steamy Windows" when stopped, not matter what brand...
I stopped using contacts in '01 and use prescriptions glasses for all sports (racing or training) i.e. paddling (surf/river), running, cycling (road/mtb) etc. and have found the odd time that the may mist up or get scratched/dirty etc. far outweighs the want/need to go back to contacts.
You can get protective coverings as well as various tints (too improve clarity etc) for lens, so personally I think it's a no brainer...
had mine done 7 years ago after many years of glasses and contacts - best thing ever including sliced bread.
Should be free in my opinion, but had i known how good it was I would have borrowed the money and done it sooner.
And the new techniques are even schmicker.
then u can wear whatever u like riding
I dont seem to be able to wear contacts anymore either. Seems these newest types dont work for me. Feels like they never sit right.
Anyhow, I wear an old set of daily glasses which are polycarbonate. Very light, very strong and only fog up in the most extreme conditions ie cold night rides.
My Optometerist, Hilton, at Emporio Optical North Sydney
(South African and right by North Sydney Station on the highway)has suggested a number of options are available from known brands who now make their range with presciption lenses on request. A couple of guys from early nobmob have been to him. Now at the end of the day it depends on your prescription. If too high, they just cant make them because of the curved nature of the sunnies, they get too think. I am a 3.5 - 4.0 and options are limited in the fashion sunnies with prescription lenses department. I would recommend Hilton anyway but look him and have a chat. Craig
