Relax its not a "which tyres should i use" question. Just curious if tyres have a shelf life. i dont want to put some on my bike in a tubeless set up, that ive had for a few years and they blow up on me.

Yes, rubber has a shelf life. It will continue to vulcanise , and oxidise in light. When i used to race radio control model cars semi-pro, i used to store the tyres in sealed bags in light-proof boxes to keep them "fresh". The difference was noticeable on the track if you didn't, they didn't behave as consistently nor did they offer as much grip.

Its harder to tell with mtb tyres as conditions aren't so repeatable but i reckon the same thing happems. New rubber is stickier. Old habits persist... i store my spares in a lightproof box. Eye-wink

If theyve been stored in a plastic bag in a deep dark place they'll probably be ok. If not, I'd not risk it if theyre more than say 3 years old and / or lack that new tyre smell Eye-wink

Talcum powder is a great preservative for rubber, improves its longevity.
