Hi Guys,

I went ahead & purchased the Garmin edge 800. Would love some advice on what type of maps I need to download? what brand? & where to get them from? I do most of my mountain biking in W.A. Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Dave.

You need to download the OSM map, which has all the mountain bike trails on it. It is free.

What's this OSM map you speak of?

It's a kind of home made map that anyone can add to or modify. It's what is called "Open Source".

You download it from this site and install it on your computer. Read and follow the instructions.

If you want to view the map on your computer you need to install Garmin Basecamp, and Garmin Mapinstall to upload it to your GPS, although there are other ways.

There are also iPhone apps for OSM maps. I reckon the best one is MapsWithMe.

I use Garmin's TOPO Aus & NZ map, which if you haven't received with your Edge 800, can buy on eBay.

But I have also on a second SD card: Open MTB Map (http://openmtbmap.org), which is an OSM stylised to highlight MTB trails. It use to be free… but with some imaginations you can grab it for free.

( I even managed to have both Open MTB Map + Garmin City Nav (useless on a MTB) together… not easy)
