Bike for a friend.

Mate is looking to get into MTBing.
Cos he's MY mate I get to decide what he rides
Ideally looking for a XC type dually, 100-130mm 26", up to $3k, can be 2nd hand, medium, preferably carbon.
I'd normally suggest something like a Giant Trance or Anthem, but they are all 29ers.
Whats good these days?
Thanks.

If you are looking for a cross country dual suspension bike I would go for a test on a Giant Anthem.I know you said you aren't really after a 29er but neither was I when I took a few bikes for test rides,26 and 29 bikes.I ended up getting a 2012 x1 anthem and it is an awesome xc bike for the price I paid new $2500.00.If he is getting into mountain biking the 29ers rolling speed may appeal to him.
down in manly are well worth a look.If i was in the market for a new bike id go there for sure.i test rode a pollygon collosus AX3.0 that was very similar to my reign except better specced and a grand cheaper!
