Best Sydney MTB trail for a 10 year old

Hey Guys,

First post so... hi.

Wondering which trails (other than the new MTB trails at Hornsby) you would recommend for a 10 year old to ride. Something that is not too technical. Hills are not too bad as he can walk his bike if needed.

Can be anywhere in the Sydney or Blue Mountains region.

Thanks in advance!

Easy trails, plenty of features, scaleable for a novice and its a nice location.

... Is good if you enter from the end of Day Road, Cheltenham.

Thanks Guys.

Lane Cove is not too far (closer than RNP) so might be worth a go. I was thinking Oxford Falls as well but is it really steep hills there or are there some flatter areas where you can ride as well?

Terrey Hills' Perimeter and Long Trails starting at the Japanese school might be an option. Some nice views to be had along Long Trail, and the views at the end are stunning. Gradients are reasonable except for the nasty pinch climbs at the end, but 90% of riders walk them anyway.

Oxy is more free-ride with woodwork and gap jumps... probably not so suitable for your average 10yo

Try this one. Head out Grose road until the gate. Pretty easy out and back that I have taken my kids on (9 & 11). Great view when you get to the end of the out. Take a bread roll or snack and enjoy it for 20 minutes, you may even catch a glimpse of some wedge tail eagles cruising around

I've seen plenty of Kids Riding/walking Mt Annan Botanical Gardens and that includes the blue loop.

Bairne Track off West Head Road is a great trail for the young ones. About 5km each way, and nice view at the end.

This is the only trail that stays up high on the plateau which makes it easy for the kids but still interesting enough that you are in NP.

What he said ^^^

FWIW i got into this Mtb caper becausr my then 10yo wanted me to take him around Manly Dam.

What i didnt know at the time was that he secretly wanted to kill me Eye-wink but he handled it far better than i. He simply walked the sketchy bits rather than macho me who tried to ride everything with no clue how

I'd agree with Hawkeye.

My 7yo and 12yo have been out riding Perimeter and Long quite a bit recently. They love it.

I know it's further afield but we took them down to Wingello and camped at the trail head in the forest. The boys loved the single track....
Drove down Saturday morning, rode Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning and were back home for dinner ( and a mamoth bike washing session...)

Done a similar thing a few weeks ago up at Awaba.... same thing..... fabulous

Good luck

not sure why you excluded the Hornsby track, but the green loop, which is accessible by easy fire trail from the track head would be OK for a 10 yr old as long as he doesn't get bored easily. It is only about 250 m but is a good surface with a few berms and pumpy sorts of sections.

Agree with Lach.

There is a kids loop at Yellomundie. They run juniors racing there when they hold club races. The only problem it is probably out of your way and may only keep the 10yo amused for about 30 minutes...

but my 6 yr old would be content in riding the northern end of Yellomundee , I haven't been there in a while will get out there a week after the rain stops ..

Thanks everyone...

That's an awesome list Smiling

I excluded the Hornsby track because I already knew about it and yeah, it is a little bit too little for the 10 year old. he get's bored on that one pretty quickly and wants to move to the intermediate (but he is too slow for the intermediate if there are other riders there).

Will check out all the tracks mentioned above Smiling

Cheers!
