There is no shame in walking
… and I’m glad I did cause it was difficult to even walk it with my jelly legs at 68km - I’m sure I would have fallen in if I had of ridden it.
Proud to have completed my first 100km race (in fact my first 100km ride….) without falling off. Was aiming for around the 6 hour mark based on previous 50km efforts and achieved that goal!! Very stiff and sore that evening and the following day but recovered quite quickly on Monday to start planning the next big race!
The course was a lot tougher than I had had envisaged (probably would have paid to do a recce but, unfortunately other stuff in life gets in the way). The extent of sandstone drop downs and step ups was not something that I had truly appreciated. In hindsight I would have not ridden the Agogo (29er hardtail) but my duallie. Would have been slower up the hills but a lot more gentle going down. My body took a real battering. The Agogo did however perform faultlessly – thanks to Jordan and Cam at Ride in Workshop for the once over before the race
And a big shout out to my mate Emilio who was 8th to the top of the first big hill and in the top 20 overall at @ the 26km mark before he did the right thing in pulling over for a faster rider and proceeded to have a branch snap his d/hanger. I caught up to him about 25 mins later and stopped only for him to wave me on… “Nothing you can do mate”. After I finished I expected that he would be hours…. but - no - being the Mr Fix it that he is, he turned the bike into a single speed and rode the next 60+ kms to finish with a 5:58. Great stuff.
Well run event and a beautiful part of the world…. But gee it’s a one tough old race.

Well done Grant. It is a tough race especially if you haven't ridden the course before. Also good to see you're already thinking of your next race.
Sounds like a very good ride for your first experience. Well done !
Not bad at all for your first 100k'er.
I think my first one was around the 8hr mark!
Anything under 6hr is a very good ride - especially completely blind. Even if you rode it again this weekend, you'd probably shave off 10mins - just knowing what is around the corners!
Well done - good ride.
Be careful, you might end up part of this Nobmob Veteran / Masters 'burn up' group - there is a serious escalation in ability amongst the ranks here!
For the positive comments and encouragement.
I have even gone so far as to put together a little race program for the rest of the year. Hopefully I can fit in some training in between races lol
What's your next race?
And then the 3 ring circus. Wingello is awesome!
