Re stanning a Tubles - having valve issues.
NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.
Folks,
Having recently "dethorned" my back tubles tire and got it back on full of stans the value is pissing air from where the valve meets the rim. Ive tried reseating it, I fiddled and its isnt working, so the question is - is it a case of maybe there is left over crap from the previous or some thing or do I need to get a new valve?
Thanks
Yarg

Ok leave that one alone :0 - couple of things you can try which I'm sure you may have already. So at the risk of teaching you to suck eggs ! :
Is it new tape on rim? Check it is seating/sealing all way round rim and isn't torn, got hole in it or not sealing anywhere around the rim and allowing a path for air to leak into the rim. If tape leaks anywhere it is likely to come out from around the valve stem as the spoke nipples often seal themselves. So the leak from the rim need not be at the valve stem though that is where the air comes out.
Remove valve and clean any goo from it - Check that rubber sits properly in and on the rim tape (assume your rims use rim tape). Reseat and tighten valve nut so it slightly distorts the rubber on the valve. If rubber of valve is distorted may need new valve.
Put a small rubber washer under the valve nut (not sure what valves you using but some come with that rubber washer) but check everything else first.
FWIW an Avag'day
Took the tyre part way off reseated the valve, added some more stans pumped away - still some valve issues but i think the stans got it.
If it goes down now Im seeking professional help . . . . . .

I've had this. As Oldernslower intimates there can only be three possibilities.
1. the valve isn't sealing in the inner rim hole.
2. The tape isn't sealing the spoke holes.
3. The valve is letting by (stans in the valve)
It doesn't sound as if you have the third so re tape the rim & clean & refit the valve. I used contact adhesive around the valve base on a ghetto conversion recently due to this.

I've had this recently and the issue was definitely the rim tape and that was after three attempts with my new Ikons. I also put a little rubber stopper under the lock nut and bought a new valve to make sure it's good as new. All sorted now and running beautifully!
As the others have said the rim tape is usually the cause. If not, the other thing you can do is cut a small piece say 2x2cm from an old tube, pierce a small hole through it then push the valve through before inserting in the rim. It behaves as a washer would.
I have been told you can add teflon plumbing tape around the rubber of the valve.
