By Buck - Posted on 04 March 2008

When:
Saturday, 8 March, 2008 - 08:00
Duration:
4 hours
Come Rain or Shine:
If it's raining, I won't be there.
Ride Database Entry:
Terrey Hills / Duffys Forest
Details:

Well after my dismal showing last week on the long ride I want to give it another go.

Ride will probably consist of the same tracks ie. Perimeter, Long, Duck Holes, Waratah and Centre Tracks.

I'll try to stop less this time too as I need to get back around lunch time and also becuase I got terribly crampy legs after stopping for a longish break last week!

This time I'll probably do Perimeter and Long trails to finish off the ride rather than as a starter. Also rather than waiting every few hundred metres we can just regroup at trail junctions to make it more of a flowing ride.

Who's in?
Rob, craigs, Bernd, tienster, Buck, lorrie, Andy Bloot, Gary, lozza6, Brian, InC (11 riders)
Rob craigs Bernd tienster Buck lorrie Andy Bloot Gary lozza6 Brian InC
What Happened?

Were you there and have a story to tell?

Would you like to do the Southern loop around Terrey Hills? Booralie, Sandy, etc, etc?

Was toying with Andos this weekend, but this ride sounds a bit more sensible. Eye-wink

tienster's picture

Buck: we should start with Duck Hole then Waratah then Centre then back at the cars for refuelling then Perimeter and Longtrack out and back to finish off.

Tien.

Pretty keen to come along on this track. Wondering how far and time it takes for this. I don't want to hold anyone up if it is too hardcore.
Thanks

Buck's picture

Will be close to 50km. Will take around 4hrs with stops.

Here is the GPS data from last weekend.

Thanks Buck. Will make a decision before the weekend.

I will pencil it in!

I can't do Saturday but might go out Sunday morning on my own early around 6.30am and do the same trails.
Cheers
Olaf

Gary's picture

I have to be back by midday so I'm going to start early ride perimiter and long first then catch up with you guys at eight.

Bernd's picture

.. do the same, go with Gary early (6-30am Start) and catch the 8am guys somewhere....
Bernd

lorrie's picture

it wont take 4hrs to do those tracks??? if we dont stuff around then 3.5hrs???

Buck's picture

If you look at Rob's data he took a little over 3hrs riding time.
My computer said around 3hr 20min as I was dying near the end.

So yes IF we stop for only 5-10min at the ends of trails then we can do it in under 4hrs.

Also take into account possible mechanicals since Lorrie and his Specialized is coming (Just kidding Sticking out tongue) Last week Rob had a flat and Loz broke a chain so we lost a fair bit of time there.

Brian's picture

Put me down for the 8am start.

Andy Bloot's picture

i'll be there for an 8am start, but I won't be doing the whole 50. Gotta keep something in the legs for Menai the next day.

Rob's picture

We talked about this again last night, some of the tracks we could take a look at are here on this loop-ish ride:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/2203200

If you added Centre/Duck Hole and removed Long you'd get more Ks and more vertical. It's an option is all I'm saying! Eye-wink

Buck's picture

Man that is a whole lot of climbing in only 40km.
Think we'll have to take a vote on the morning!

Brian's picture

I'm always up for anything. Good test for the Womerah Range training ride the following weekend as the hill profiles their look massive.

Buck's picture

Yep Rob is subtley trying to tell us that he wants to do this different loop Sticking out tongue

Also have to consider the people that are starting early at 6:30am. Possibly we'll meet them at the carpark at 8am and we can then do Duck/Centre. Then we come back and do the loop as shown in Rob's GPS map.

InC's picture

Would like to come along. Will ride the first half of the ride if that is ok. Assuming about 25km?

If you are all too quick for me, please do not feel the need to wait up. Last thing I want to do is be a pain in the @ss. I come from a tri back ground however haven't raced Iron man for about 3 years. Have no other connections to the MTB world and am a bit bored of riding Manly Dam each weekend. Looking forward to a new challenge and meeting you all.

Thanks

Ben

Buck's picture

Hey Ben

I don't think anyone coming from a Ironman background will have ANY issues keeping up with us! Smiling

But yeah come do the first half and see what you think and keep going if you like.

Don't expect anything like the Dam though. It is pretty much all firetrail that we will be riding tomorrow.

craigs's picture

Someone want to make a call?
I have other things for the day (believe it or not) and a 4-5 hour ride wont work where 3-4 scrapes in.
So I am up for the 50K version as suggested for this week.

Thanks!
Craig

OK lets keep it simple as there are many people starting and finishing at various times.

The early bunch will do Perimeter/Long at 6:30am. Hopefully they will be back at the carpark by 8am as long as they keep a consistent pace up.

I will start at 8am from the carpark and will start with Duck Holes/Waratah/Centre trails. This should take a bit over 2hrs if we have a stop at the end of Waratah.

Then it's back to the carpark, refill water and off to do Perimeter/Long. If any of the early starters are mad enough they can come do this with us again to get over 70km together!

Brian's picture

Maybe the early starters should post a separate ride for the early section just the same as the one before the newbie ride the other week.

Bernd's picture

...late now to post a seperate ride, and the early ride has been moved to 6am, yes 6am and it was not me who wanted it that way!!
so we will be back at 7-30/7-45am and join you guy for the 8am ride!
Bernd

craigs's picture

So it has just bucketed down and soaked me to the bone in about 15 seconds.
I see also there has been a good dump at Terrey Hills... how do we feel about the ride in the morning?

InC's picture

How bad is the ride if it buckets down like this? Still rideable or just no good?

pikey's picture

....would we pack up and go home?

I dont think so!

Just do it (insert tick symbol here)

Greg

lozza6's picture

are you riding? Sticking out tongue

Easy to comment from the couch, hehe

Man Terry did get a fair dump...

Oh well... I'll still be there unless is absolutely pissing down in the morning...

Loz

Buck's picture

It should be alright. I know that Duck Holes and Centre Tracks are one of the best after rain. Waratah Track is also OK apart from the last few hundred metres.

At the moment I will still be there. Update tomorrow morning.

Rob's picture

There was a short but heavy period of rain last night, but these tracks handle that well so we should be on.

Well - I'll be there anyhow! Sticking out tongue

See you there!

Buck's picture

It hasn't rained much there since 11:30pm last night

Just called the crazy guys out there already and they said it was not too bad.

See you all soon

Very annoying, I thought there was another way between Anembo and Bibbenluke - that was what the red herring riding around supposedly lost was about. Look at the Terrey Hills map and you'll see what I mean and where we should have gone. Doh!

Also, all that road building is not within NP boundaries so not much we can do. Annoyingly it seems that the trail we rode with the deep stream crossing is doomed to be built out. Sad

Nice ride though, more of this kind of stuff is required before DW.

ar_junkie's picture

Shouted hello while you were still assembling in the carpark, pre ride... Maybe it was the fact that we were on, err, road bikes? Eye-wink

Bernd's picture

.. a shame we did not hear you!!!
was hanging out for a latttteeeeeee...
Bernd

Buck's picture

Sure was an amusing ride today. Funniest had to be "I know exactly where we are" Rob firstly getting us hopelessly lost and closely followed by him falling into a huge hole full of water thanks to Tien.

Well much more pleased with my effort today. At least got through without cramps for once. Looking forward to doing something similar again.
