Convict 100 Camping Advice
I'm planning to camp with my family on Friday night prior to the race. The race website mentions premium camp sites by the river, on a first come first served basis, and that the campsites are open from 1pm. Can anyone tell me how quickly these sites usually fill up? Do people arrive before 1pm to get the best spots? I'm taking Friday off work so can get there pretty early if I heed to.
We're buying a tent this week and planning on this being the first of many camping trips... So I would welcome any advice from experienced campers. We're buying a pretty big tent - 4.8m x 3m + an awning, but it's very easy to put up.

I havent camped there since they moved the race from Sunday to Saturday. (well..OK.. lets not call one of those real insurance 1 man tent thingys camping..).. But back then it seemed more popular, now there seems to be a lot less people camping and more day trippers?
I would say that you should have no problems securing a good spot on the Friday if you arrive sometime before 3ish.
Don't camp on the emergency helicopter landing site.
I might need it again.
I would get there before 1pm if you want a good spot that's large enough for your tent. And don't expect too much based on the term "premium".
Agree, the term premium is a significant overstatement
Tips.
* Plan to be self sufficient with your food. There are only two places to eat and they both get swamped. The event catering varies. So safest, easiest and least frustrating bet is to BYO.
* BYO toilet paper. Usually seem to be half the amount of toilets there to start with and the paper doesn't even make it to race day.
Otherwise, pack some chairs for the fam and get them to set up by the finish line and pray for a nice day. My better half usually doesn't find it too bad watching the race come home because there's usually something happening.
Sadly I'll miss it this year.
