29er tyres for Sydney trails and commuting.

I'm due for new tyres so I'm looking for some advice here first before I spend my $$$.

***Trail Tyres***
Currently riding Specialized Fast Trak S-Works for the front (stock tyres) and Fast Trak UST on the rear. Don't really like them as I've had quite a few wishy washy experience with them on very ordinary conditions. The S-Works are light tyres but the sidewalls are very very thin and had them torn on my rear on my first ride with them.

I'm currently looking at putting on Ardent Race 2.2 on the front and Ikon 2.2 on the rear. The version that I was going to get are the 3C EXO TR as I will be running them tubeless.
Anyone here any experience with them ? How is the Ikon as a front tyre ? The reviews I've read is that they are great rear tyre but not so good on the front.

Trails that I normally ride are Manly Dam, Royal National Park and Hornsby, with a couple of visits to Stromlo and Kowen in a year.

***Commuting Tyres***
I can use my stock wheelset for commuting so I'm thinking of getting some slicks as well for commuting to save me using the knobby tyres only for the trails ?
700c tyres will fit into these 29" rims correct ?

What are you guys using out there ? I was using the Specialized Fat Boys on my 26" for Commuting but they don't have the 29" versions here in Australia and after commuting on my 29er I don't I want to commute on my 26" hardtail anymore Smiling

I used ardent race and cross mark on a dually. I found the rear drift a bit on loose surface especially on climb mode. Overall, very durable and fast rolling I enjoy a lot. For ht, I would put something more grippy like nobby nic for sure.

I mainly do AM techy type riding and run a minion front and the new minion dhr2 rear. not the best rolling but heaps of grip for braking and cornering. Two of my mates on 29ers also run the dhr2 on the rear.

Yes, same bead seat diameter as 29er

I actually have some roadie slicks on my HT. Assuming your rims are 24-25mm wide you could use 25mm or 28mm road bike tyres on the commuter wheels.

I like and really rate the Continental GP4000S tyre for road. Rolls really well and has above average wet weather grip. As a consequence of the latter, their life is a bit reduced but 5000km is realistic. I'd rather stay rubber side down than try to stretch the budget by shortchanging myself with grip.

Schwalbe make some decent road rubber as well. Will advise which model I have when I get home.

I run Ardent race 2.20's on my 29er dually and quite like them (under $50 from Pushys.com). Set up tubeless at around 27 front 29 rear. I might try an Ikon on the rear next time if I can find one on sale. $90 for a tyre is crazy in my opinion.

Thanks guys, I've decided to try out the Ardent/Ikon front/rear combo.

BLKFOZ,
The IKON 3C EXO TR are around $50 from Pushys.

Yeah, that's where I always buy tyres from - cheapest by far (bought 26 x 2.25 Ardents for $25 a few times).
Ikon's retail for $90 at the LBS - I like to check in case they can get close to online prices.....

Im running Ardent on rear and I was recommended highroller ll on the front both have nice thick sidewalls , on my race or marshall / sweep laps at races im using the Rubena kratos front with crossmark lust on rear which im trying to sort pressure on as I havent ran crossmark for years & all my tyres are tubeless

Ian,even Pushys physical store can't match the online prices, so I doubt your LBS can match their prices.
Apparently the online and physical store are separate companies.
