New line @ 19th Hole

The new line is actually the corner after the 19th hole. Although it was funny being there on foot and seeing the track from other direction. I had never seen that drop off the 19th hole on the far left. Looks quite doo-able.

It's a roll down, pretty steep though and you have to take it diagonally to avoid the OTB rock at the bottom. A low seat and big tyres at a low pressure make it easy but on a standard XC bike it'd be mildly hairy!

Craig made it a little easier now that he pivoted the rock around so now you have a bigger area to aim for

Dammit, things shouldn't be made easier! Unless of course that wasn't the intention and there was another good reason for doing it. There's plenty of easy ways over that section and it was just hard enough to be a good challenge... making that bit easier will increase rider numbers on that side and erosion on the LHS.

My vote for the next trail maintenance day would be the bog that develops at the slightest whiff of rain, just before the first creek crossing. That's really dangerous as it looks solid until you get to it and then it swallows up your front wheel, it's in the middle of the trail and you can really get some pace up there.

Matt.

You want to make the bog bigger right? Smiling

Can't we build a jump over it?

Buck's picture

I think Pikey asked Nicole about that big bog and also the section just past here:
Bear Right

I think she said that they were too big a job to do by hand and that they would have to get contractors in with bulldozers and the like to fix it.

I was worried about 'easier' being used in that post.
Its not easier at all. There is barely any difference just an obvious danger has been realigned. I cant see the traffic increasing because of that.
There were calls on the day to make it 'easy' which were duly dismissed. If you want easy take the A line.

Other initiatives on the day included repairing areas where riders have gone around obstacles, bumps, logs, rocks, water bars (things you might expect to see MTB'ing) to keep riders on the managed trail. This in essence keeps some of the difficulty in place in the spirit of off road riding.
A couple of riders coming through the new areas did say how much better the dam was now that it was 'easier' and thanked us for our maintenance efforts. This disturbs me a little. I wondered why they weren't at Centennial Park?

Its a taboo subject I know but in making the dam sustainable there would be a tendency for it to also become 'easier'.

Yes the bog area down to the creek (that I am still removing from bike, clothes, shoes and even glasses) is on the rangers schedule and they will be enlisting professional services for this.

Hi Matt, I agree with what LadyToast and Craig just wrote.

The large rock that was moved a bit more to the side of the 'B-line' is not that big a deal. If ridden properly (you said it yourself), you would ride on an angle, right to left, down this B-line. Sticking to the correct line, you would probably miss that rock (passing it on your right) by about 30cm of leeway.

I think what has been corrected is if you stacked the bike for some reason at the top, you would crash into (or very near) that rock. I agree that it has not made the line any easier. But it has made the line safer if you crashed.

One thing I also think... this change will actually make the B-line more approachable, as it "looks" safer. Matt, I agree with you that more people will now use this line, and therefore it will become more eroded. How much? Don't know. Time will tell. I think I will be riding this line now. But remember, it is within the power of NPWS to move the rock back, or cover over the line so no one can ride it.

But, good change I think... cheers all. Smiling

just to be sure that we are all talking about the same place (I know you all are, I'm the one that's unsure now)

It's the drop behind the orange-ish tree on the right of this picture right?

..thats the one.

Craig and I disucssed the line, and though that it would be indeed be safer to move the rock over a little.

It was bloody heavy but it could certainly be moved back into place. The difficulty of the line remains the same I think, however there is aless risk if you do stack.

I guess time will tell. If it looks like that line is getting bombarded, we could always move it back (albeit maybe with a small notice to advise people!). I also think that erosion won't change much as the same number of riders will hit that area. it will just be from different angles. Nicole also mentioned possibly addressing the entire lower part of that area at the next maintenance day.

Damn thats been my secret line for years!!!
roll down the first rock and wheelie drop the second just missing the tree
I have been there for a few weeks, wwhich rock have you moved?

Matt P's picture

that would be on your right after the first roll down. we moved it a little more to the right.

craigs's picture

...yeah thats the method alright.
I think we should move the rock back...too much controversy even if the aim was for it to be a little safer.
Doable either way...

Just leave it, I was being an April fool... It'd be dangerous to move it back now, besides if more people ride that way then more people will get better at riding their bikes and everyone's happy. As long as nobody moves the tree at the bottom there's not really going to be much extra erosion!

Now if somebody could chop a few branches off the tree on the A-Line... Eye-wink (Removes tongue from cheek...)

Ta,
Matt.
