I find that it's all about getting the front wheel placed properly and then letting the rear suspension do its work as it takes the load into the step. You also need to move the bike around, not just rely on momentum; (I actually find I can clear the steps easier if I come in with virtually no speed... But that doesn't make for a quick lap.) so as that rear hits the step try shifting your weight forward and lifting the rear wheel up at the same time.
Also re the front wheel, getting it up early also helps it from getting caught down in any of the ruts, particularly important with that top step after the board walk. I pretty much do a mono to get the front wheel off the end of the board walk and onto the top of the first rock. Then a pedal or two and shifting the bike around again.
Last but not least I'm on a 26'er with a short stem; 45mm. I've been riding with a 120mm flipped stem for a while and that was heaps harder... All because it was harder to get that front wheel where I wanted it.
Keep practicing and have fun!
Thanks heaps. I'm on a 29er hardtail and guess that should make it easier so defn all in the head.
Have said it before - will have a crack next time!
