Wollombi Wild Ride
Anyone doing the wollombi ride next weekend?
What to expect?
Hopefully this rain eases up, haven't ridden in over 3 weeks!

The road back into town has half a dozen or so causeways. Last time I did the race there was hardly any water in them, but I have ridden back to Wollombi after a particularly wet weekend out at Big Yango and the water in a few of the crossings was over the top of the wheels on the Niner! And one of the crossings was about 100m wide. We had to send the 4WD's around the long way.....
Other than that, expect a stiff climb up the first hill, a screaming descent, another long but not as steep climb, a bit of up and down along the top of the ridges before screaming back down the aforementioned hill and into town on about 15 km (IIRC) of relatively flat dirt road. With a short detour through a winery on the way out and then again on the way back.
Not a skerrick of single track, but it's nice country.
im doing the race, these deep water crossings don't sound like much fun.
a 100m wide crossing at a depth over the top of a 29" wheel.
that's going to cause some problems in a race.
hope its not the case
... the longer ones were shallower. The deep ones were the shorter ones - flowing fast but with a concrete bottom.
They shouldn't be too bad if the rain eases off a bit this week, but they WILL have water in them.
I'm going to the Back Yamma Bigfoot, where it "should" be a bit drier.....
The cow paddies and the first big climb separate the men from the boyz. I'm in too.
Steep climbs, creek crossings, rough trails, cow paddies and beautiful countryside.
Sounds like a mountain bike race - bring it on!
This will be my first event, I hope the sun sticks around and dries it up a bit.
So I assume it's all fire trail then, sounds like a good track in a nice area.
That big yamma Bigfoot looks decent, most single track going off the website. Maybe next year!
I've done it a few times and it is just fire trails. There is a climb early on in the race that's a bit steep but otherwise it is more like road riding than mountain biking.
Don't get me wrong. It is a good fitness challenge and is worth doing but don't expect anything other than fire trail riding.
Good luck to eveyone racing tomorrow - Tristan (@ Tristania) and I are driving up together in the morning. We'll most likely need to stay for the presentations too - and not because of me, if you know what I mean!
Weather forecast doesn't look too bad - we might get a couple of showers, but I think we'll get a bit of sunshine too.
Hope to meet a few more NobMobber there.
Cheers,
JP
Latest update from the race organisers:
"Hardly any water on the corssings, and the trails look great"
Argh riding in the wet is no fun at all. Damn this rain
