Ok what's the best out there say upto $250 to $300 want to use them for both my road bike to get to work and an occasional night ride on my mtb

I've got a Gemini Duo. Mid-priced, good battery and charger and nice and bright. Very light for helmet mounting.
There are heaps of options out there, if you spend a bit of money most will be OK.
I too have a Gemini duo (1500) and so far very happy with it,
I would have preferred to get the 4 cell battery, claims 3 hours on high, but wiggle had a great deal on one remaining 2 cell system.
These days you should be able to get some pretty serious lights for that price. Fully waterproof, light, bright and with good battery life.
I'd be going for something that could be bar or helmet mounted so you can try both positions and see which you prefer.
Top of the line you'd be looking at something from Lupine. Eg. the Piko model. Not cheap at $425 retail though:

To get into night riding try something cheap to start? The 'magic shine' clones are cheap and available many places. currently 60 bucks on T7:
