Crying Sand
Why does blinking make sand come out of my eyes?
Yes, this was a top, top ride but not really what was intended. I had this mental plan that today was to be the peak of Dirtworks training (2 weeks out). In this mental plan I was to ride until something broke, me or the machine, or the 80Km target in my head. After having a cold most of the week figured I would break first but the trails had different ideas.
Bernd planned to do Duck Hole + Centre + Perimeter + Long to which I would have liked to add another lap of Duck Hole + Centre with Waratah thrown in for good measure - that would have made 83Km. Although I think people thought I was joking about a second lap, no, no, really... I was up for it... honest!!
Things started out nice enough, although the climb up West Head Road was a bit slow, or maybe the other guys were just a bit too fast? Then back to hit Perimeter and things were looking a bit too wet. Getting to the end of Long Trail it was becoming clear that water and sand were going to eat the brakes alive long before my legs or anything else gave way.
On the return we had a brief chat at the Long junction. Not a sole showed any sign of wanting to do more distance than planned, and rightly so - conditions were filthy. My rear brake was down to 'do not touch' status and the rest of the crew were telling the same story.
Oh well... so no more distance plan, tried to go a little faster from there on and on the road return. Finished feeling good as did the rest of the gang by the look of it.
Top ride, smiles, who cares about the rest of the distance.
