Attempted theft - Warringah Mall
Just a heads up - some scumbag tried to pinch my teenage sons trance from bike racks at warringah mall located under the car park ramp near the bus bay (near bing lee). Not the best place to park a bike I know, and he won't be parking it there again - no cameras or passerbys.
Whilst it was a week or so ago just wanted to put it out there.
The scumbags had cut half way thru his bike lock - a good quality plastic coated multi strand cable. I suspect they must have been watching cause he was only gone 15 minutes.
Reported to mall security but I doubt anything will be done.

You can cut through this...

... in approx 10 seconds (takes 3 of 4 'nibbles').
So would be thieves must also be idiots!
A Solid 'D' Lock is the only way to go if you're parking a bike in a public place like that, with a cable to back it up so you don't get wheels etc nicked.
Like Rob said, a half decent cable cutter that you can fit in a pocket goes through a bike cable in a matter of seconds.
2 neighbours have lost bikes parked at Manly Wharf recently with good quality cable locks on them...
Do locks ever stop a bike thief?
Every bike that I have ever heard of getting nicked was locked up and or in secure premise.
A solid D Lock is a heavy thing to carry around.. do they really work? or is a case of the thief just moving onto someone else's bike.. a bike still gets stolen and the cycling gods cry some more?
But as they say in the US, you don't have to outrun the bear, you only have to outrun your mate.
