Stuff from the US

Looking at the prices of certain things in the US got me wondering about getting some stuff sent over by a mate out there. Has anyone done similar and got away with it?

There's nothing to get away with mate... keep it under $1000 and it's duty free. Used goods are fine if you want to go take a trip and bring something back.

What is the duty rob. Is it GST (ie 10%). Because if it's only GST, then items over $1000 are still worth buying. I'm looking at buying a frame, but couldn't find anything on what the duties are.
thanks.

Duty on frames is 5% ISTR (although if it is a US made frame this is probably 0% due to the FTA).

Cost = [US Price + freight](converted to Aus) x Duty x 1.1 (GST) + customs fee

Note Customs have their exchange rate which may be different from what it was when you paid for the goods.

Thanks for the formula alchemst.

The reason I ask is that the parts I am after (suspension bits) are not shipped to aus by the US stores, probably as Fox want to keep different prices in different countries. I have been looking at bikeparts.com but think others are the same. I would get the bits at chainreaction but they don't have the model I want.

There is also http://www.buyusa.com.au which are supposed to be able to so the same thing for you, for a small fee.

Time to do a bit more research...

EDIT: just checked that link and it's wrong. I'll work the correct one out and post it up

I rang [Ed. snip] in California (you have to ring because they don't answer emails) because I heard that US stores don't ship Fox. The guy on the phone said they ship Fox forks to Aus. no problem. Approx. $US700 for an 08 Talas RLC and $79 delivery.

[Ed. snip] have them at $720 list, [Ed. snip] would probably match $700 if that is right, and I'm pretty sure shipping is free over $600 us. Oh yeah, you get one on one service from the guy that owns the store

It was a little while ago.
But as of now I'm a [Ed. snip] convert, Stu.

just as promised, the website I was thinking of is called priceusa.com.au

Looking at getting one or two things, not necessarily MTB related, and am wondering if anyone has used them or has reliable feedback from someone that has i.e. not feedback that was read off a random online review as I have read a few reviews already.

Ta muchly...
Cool

Shaun, I have used them previously and I am currently having something shipped using this agent. While they are trustworthy, their service is pretty poor in that they are a 1 person operation and so when that person goes on leave, don't expect a reply in a hurry. It generally takes up to a month between placing your order and receiving your item. If you're not in a hurry, you could do worse I'm sure. Mick

Hey Guys,
If you want to continue be able to get F0x stuff out of the us, best not to list the shop names, pass it around by PMs.
If the local shops/distributors get wind, they could probably escalate it with F0x in the US and have their F0x business shut down or at least scrutinised making it less likely to continue 'helping us out'.
On a local front, T7 regularly have Fox sales and are pretty competitive with their pricing by the time you consider shipping.

I just found a set of Avid Elixr R's on ebay for $300 shipped. I gather I won't pay any duty on these?

What's the deal if I have issues down the track? am I going to be able to get local warranty or am I on my own?
