Sparrows toot ride on saturday 3rd?
Is anyone interested in checking out the Warratah Trail on Sat at 7am? Done by 9am.
It's off West Head Road, the trail on the left before the Salvation loop. Its an out and back of mostly firetrail and some sections single track. Intermediate level technical (so I'm told) so all rideable. Views are reputed to be great and at that time, there should be a few animals to spot too.

Plus... that's a big day for us, so getting a ride in early would be good.
And double plus, it doesn't sound that long so could easily add Salvation or other tracks on if we're still feeling the need for more.
Pencil me in at this stage
Very interested to join the group.
I suppose that the meeting point is on West Head Road itself where the track starts (sorry but I have never ridden with this group before)?
Thx
Frederic
Yes to Fred's question.... lets meet at the gate to the trail which is on West Head Road. There is a good sign for the trail next to the gate. There is also a big map on a sign when you come over the hill towards the Warratah trail. It shows all the trails in the area and a "you are here". Check it out if you are feeling a bit lost.
I would love to join you but 7am is too early for me! Maybe next time then.
As a matter of interest, how long is the ride?
Liz
I just measured Waratah Track on the map at 3.6Km to the fork. North fork 730m South fork 1000m... chug, chug... 10.66Km out and back if you take both forks to the end.
If I'm there (ahem) then will be looking to do another out and back on Salvation, or have never been down Elvina so perhaps a look there.
I met some women recently who ride the Elvina track on their road bikes so I assume they are either nutters or its a pretty smooth and hard packed trail. Haven't been out there though, so its all a bit of rumour.
I'm keen to do some Salvation/Wallaroo action after Warratah.
Celia
Please could you tell me, are these trails very hilly?
Also, would you be able to ride a horse out there?
Thank you!
Christine
narrrr you won't get much hill action on these trails. They follow the ridge line mostly so there will be a few pinches but nothing long and painful.
As for horses, I'm not sure about these ones. Best check with the national Park office.
Celia
Funny this, but the trails to the West of West Head Road are mostly flat, whereas those to the East tend to slope steeply down to the water. I know this of Towlers Bay and The Basin at least and Elvas looks similar too.
Love to join you guys tomorrow - but not sure where Westhead is/how t get there
will be coming from Wahroonga
From Wahroonga you can go...
1. down to the Pacific Hwy and left onto Mana Vale Rd
2. Cruise along until you get to the Terrey Hills turn off (sign posted) and take McCarrs Creek Rd (right) at the round about
3. Follow this until you get to a fork and a toll booth. Go right which is more of McCarrs Creek Rd
4. Keep going (nice drive) till you see a bunch of water hole called Duck Holes. West Head Road is the left turn at these holes.
5. You can park here and ride (bit of a hill climb from hell) or drive up through toll booth. Go right at the next juction (whichis more West Head Rd) and keep and eye out on left for the Warratah trail.
See you there!
Celia
If its raining like it is right now - see buckets of...
then I suggest we postpone for another day.
Although this suggestion is mostly cos I'm a wuz when it comes to cold AND wet... its actually quite bad for the trail to ride in the rain, more erosion etc.
Celia
Agreed - if it's raining I won't be there.
If the weather remains the same as tonight no way you will see me outside (I am not used to the wintery crappy european weather anymore).
Frederic
count me out - might do Cascades or Terry Hills later on
happy riding people
Bit of a struggle to get up for 7am start. Even harder for some eh Celia?
Anyhow, turned out to be the best part of the day if you ask me, took some pictures to prove it and slapped them in Waratah Track Gallery.
We did venture down to Elvina Bay as planned. Having farted about a bit on Waratah thought we would be out of time, but the down (hardly 'out') and back took just over 30 mins I think. Killer climb back, check the profile:
