Thredbo on Giant AthemX
Hi,
I've just got into MTB and bought myself an AnthemX 29er as I got it for great price. Have been riding OMV, Bantry Bay, etc.. am loving the bike, seems way more capable than I right now.
I'm planning to hit Thredbo over summer, and am just wondering if the Anthem with 100mm travel (front and back) is capable of the flow and/or downhill trails.
I imagine the flow trail will be ok, but the downhill trail looks quite severe. I don't imagine I'll be attacking these with too much speed either.
I can always hire a DH bike, but will be there a few days and will probably aim for a couple of trip, so am wondering if I should get a more diffent machine.
Thanks in advance, damien

My normal mantra is "Run what you brung" but,
Depending on your skill level you could get the anthem down the DH trail but it would be much more fun on a proper DH bike, so I would consider hiring one to see how you like it, Especially if you are not too confident skillwise. A slack long travel bike is much more forgiving when the terrain gets steep
Id highly recommend hiring a downhill bike for the DH track as even I wouldnt ride my trail bike on it.
Your anthem will be fine on the flow trail and for the new all mountain trail opening up this season which crosses to merritts and descends. Plus there is the really nice valley trail which goes all the way to the ski tube. They do shuttles to take you back to thredbo, just find out from the guys in the bike shop.
Hi guys,
thanks for the info, exactly what I was after.
I was confused about references to the all mountain vs flow trail - sounds all good though.
My current thinking is take the Anthem, hit the flow/mount trails and then grab a rental if I feel up to it. If not, seems there is heaps to ride first trip anyway and just get better.
I'm keen to get a few lessons - any instructor recommedations either local or at thredbo?
Kind Regards, damien
I have an anthem and I sepnt a week down there this past January. I had originally intended to ride Thredbo but having to do the 2 hour induction to do the lifted rides put me off. We wanted to keep the wives happy and not dissapear for a whloe day. My mate and I also decided that with so much other good riding around Jindybyne and the rest of the area we didnt need to ride thedbo. In the space of 5 days we rode Mill Creek, Bungandore, Lake crackenback and the thredbo valley and all were excellent xc trails. Just a thought
Hey Damien, if your new to mtb'ing, do not take your Anthem down the downhill trail, you'll destroy your bike, but that's if you don't hurt yourself first! The flow trail will be fine, as will the new all mountain trail, plus the Thredbo Valley Trail too. I'm there quite often during the season, i've never seen to many Anthems come down the DH trail! Go for a walk down the DH trail, then if you think your up to it, go hire a DH bike, & get a lesson, Luke is a great instructor.
I don't want to see people getting hurt from bad advice.
Cheers
Thanks - any more details on the Luke guy? Might be obvious to many but I'm a muppet and don't know anyone.
Cheers, ds
Luke works for Thredbo Mtb, he's the really tall guy, you can't miss him. He does inductions in the morning, then can do lessons after that, just give Thredbo mtb a call. When you see Luke, tell him you were recommended by Arthur, he'll show you the ropes. You'll have to do induction course first, so you'll see him there.
Have fun.
