I am in the process of getting indemnity insurance and they were asking all sorts of questions regarding the mountain biking. It's interesting that the statistics show that women are more prone to injury. Although, my bruised legs would definitely confirm that...
MTB has never been an extreme sport. the demographic says the average rider is a 20-40yo nature based recreationalist.
However it is the portrayal of the more extreme aspects of it in the media that is the cause of high insurance premiums and a reluctance of land managers to deal with it.
The sooner we convince the general public we are not a bunch of loons after a cheap adrenaline hit regardless of the effects the better we will be as a sport.
"Extreme Sports" were 90s marketing hype and I can't believe we still cling to the term.
I think it was John Stevenson who said there only 2 extreme sports, high altitude mountaineering and cave diving. with the other so called extreme sports if you stuff up you may get injured or killed, with these you can do every thing right and still die
we've cleared that one up!
Doing everything right and still getting killed doesn't sound so much fun.
that money for studies and research was used for something as worth while as this
rather then the more ridiculous studies that the majority of money seems to get used on
Kurt
Lets hope the powers that be make proper use of the report & it has a positive effect on cycling.

Hi Flynny
At the risk of opening a can of worms..
Using JS's criteria, I'd add cycle commuting...(sorry, too dumb to know how to add a smiley here)
CB
But it's an "activity" not a sport
Can't believe i fall into the 0.25% that have been taken to hospital....now thats embarrassing!
Don't worry mate, been there, done that!
You should be proud mate - congratulations
You're a part of the quarter %er's
NoBMoB should issue all eligible members a patch to wear on their jersey
if you took yourself to hospital? Does that count? Or does something like airlifted or ambulance only count?
thats..only 2.5 people of 1000 members of this site...
I think that could be a biased sample of road riders....
Remember the NOBMOB motto "...if didn't fall off your not trying hard enough!"
The stats must be quite old, like before I took up the sport.
John.
