Sorry for the extended outage just now folks.

Had to reboot the server (front intake fan needed replacing) and for some reason when it came back none of the Kernel modules would load. Lots of errors as the silly thing thinks I changed the cpu!

version magic '2.6.23.13-homebrew.fc4 mod_unload 686 4KSTACKS ' should be '2.6.23.13-homebrew.fc4 mod_unload K8 4KSTACKS '

Great, huh? So it's in a 'barely alive' state right now after I shoved just enough modules in ('-f' is your friend) to get the network going and the site up.

Just for fun one of the RAID arrays decided it needed a rebuild too, although that could be down to me having to pull the plug a couple times.

Hmmmm... think a kernel rebuild is in order, might as well upgrade while we're at it.

Such is the life of your sysop!

Probably the only downside of this platform?

To be fair it's more my fault than the O/S. I may well have rebuilt the kernel and meant to reboot to test but didn't get round to it. The server had been up for almost 6 months until just now.

It also doesn't help that it boots from a RAID array so needs a whole load of stuff built in. Well - so I thought - if doing this now it'd be in an initrd and modules now I know how to do that properly.

So yes, doh! Eye-wink

"might as well upgrade while we're at it" - maybe time to upgrade since there are 5 newer version of fedora that have been released. Good luck

LOL... well spotted. No, in fact the distro won't get an upgrade at this time, just the kernel. You'll note the running kernel isn't that old. Sticking out tongue

Lucky this is just a development box, huh? Wouldn't stand for that kind of outage in the real world. Eye-wink

FWIW, when I have more time the box will get a new distro. CentOS is the plan though - FC4 was meant to be put on as a test and has outstayed it's welcome. Just about everything useful is compiled from source as of course FC4 support ended long ago so it's the only way to get newer versions of the stuff that's needed.

How much is this all costing you? Should we have a Bunnings sausage sizzle for the mob?? Seriously do we need to take up a collection for the costs that go into keeping this website operational??

Think we've already had this conversation Eye-wink

Don't worry about it - this server does more than just look after NoBMoB stuff (is general file server, runs 2 Squeezeboxes, MythTV, few other hobby sites, etc, etc) so not like it's actually costing anything in that sense.

The only 'cost' involved is time, and the annoyance (to both you and I) that when little jobs like last night go wrong the site is off-line.

Hi Rob...nice to hear that other Nobmobbers are into the little thing of beauty...

Mine sits in the kitchen, keeping everybody up-to-date on the Tour De France...(and other news)

Did you tune yours into the TDF RSS feeds yet?

Looks like I have to point my Squeezebox to a NobMob RSS feed soon...?

Rgds Hans

boys, boys, boys! This is a cycling website.

Rob's picture

Nah - I read the news on a PC screen. SB2 is for music Smiling

We do have feeds, BTW, but perhaps I should make them more prominent? Eye-wink

All done. Server is now on the latest Kernel (2.6.26) and sprouted another GB of RAM to bring it up to 3GB total. Well it was in a desktop which has been shoved over to MythTV duties so gave some up that wasn't required for that.

Now... when only the data centre cabling to finish and we're set! Eye-wink

Now I'm interested.

Before hand I thought my wife was talking, Blah, Blah, Blah!
