Knee Injury - Help

OK, I know I've seen some of you guys with strapping around your knees so I'm looking for some suggestions. I did triathlons many centuries ago and stopped after being unable to resolve a knee injury which would flare up when riding. After many ceturies of not riding, I got into mountain biking about 4 years ago. Surprisingly, until now, I haven't experienced the same problem with my knee (I'm guessing because of the constant shifts in body weight when MTBing as against the fairly constant rotations on the road). More recently, I've been hitting the road (on my MTB) to break the training up and give the joints a rest. I rode West Head yesterday and my old knee injury has come back to haunt me. I know that if you have pain on the front of your knee they suggest your seat is too low, and behind the knee your seat is too high (a big generalisation I'm sure). My pain is the top, inside of the knee. Can anyone recommend either a sports injury physio with a cycling background or someone to get me set up properly on my bike. I know there is someone out west (ex pro cyclist) who has all the high tech equipment to set people up properly on their bikes. I think there was an article on him in a AMB magazine but I can't seem to find it. Anyway, any suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers, Mick

Contrary to popular belief the guys at Turramurra Cycles are great. Speak to guy named Simon, he is their MTB specialist and for a sum $150 plus parts he'll bike fit you.

I can suggest both a sports physio who rides and is in Belrose and excellent OR if you are feeling like really being 'out there' another person in Dee Why who does Bowen Treatment which is an alternative therapy which works like magic - i have an endless supply of people who have been converted to her from touch football to marathon runners, and cyclists - it's great and I would recommend her to anyone... Her name is Nikki and her number is 0403 124 163 - say you got her number from me - and anyone else out there - I can't rave enough about how well it works...
For the tradional stuff I would suggest Craig - I am not sure he is back from following the TDF but his number is 9452 5035
good luck!

He is a sports physiologist, and as well as fitting, does VO2 testing, training plans, metagenics cell analysis etc.
I used him a year ago and am just about to have a refresher session.
www.hert.com.au
He has worked with some of Australia's top athletes, both on and off road.
This is for fitment though, and he will help relieve the cause of the problem through correct fitting. If you are after immediate help for the injury, some of the other posts may be helpful too.
He is setting up a new practice in the City, and working from home at the moment. btw, Much cheaper than Steve Hog (as quoted below)

Thanks to all you guys for the helpful info. Much appreciated. Christine, I will start with your tips seeing you gave it the hard sell. I'll take the plunge and give Nikki a bell and let you know how I go. Thanks again. See you on the trails. Mick

You probably have postural issues in the mix.

Bike fitter: Steve Hogg at Pedal Pushers at Rosebery.
He has fitted hundreds of cyclists of the last 15 years or so, including countless Olympians and local and foreign pros. Look 'em up on White Pages. He has the full deal with fully adjustable fit bike connected to a power meter. Costs about $500 + any parts for the full procedure including postural, core strength and flexibility assessments, working out what your ideal bike dimensions are and fitting you to your current bike. Book well ahead - he's in demand therefore difficult to get to see. I got lucky and got in quick on a cancellation.

Physio: Martin Krause at Back in Business Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapy at North Sydney 9922 6806. I am currently one of his works in progress. I was referred to him by Steve.

Tell them both I sent you. They're well worth the money.

That's the one, Steve Hogg. $500, ouch but worth it at the end of the day I'm sure. I actually have been to Martin previously for hip injuries (hip, knees....something tells me I'm not set up right on my bike). I might also give him another go if the left field bowen treatment doesn't work. Cheers, Mick.

Hi Mick

Just seen this on bikeradar.com don't know if it's useful to you or not...

An interesting read. I've booked in to spend a few hours with Steve Hogg to get me set up right. I figure there is no point treating the injury before getting to the source. Once I've identified the source, I'll then make a decision as to whether I need to get treatment to fully eradicate the soreness. Thanks for the link. Cheers, Mick
