First Aid
Once again today, it reinforces the fact that everyone should carry a first aid kit in their backpack on rides.
Rob had a good stack going down Shephards Gully today and put a good 10cm long gash down his forearm. It was deep too....down to the muscle.
I did my best to patch him up and off to Hornsby Hospital we went. Well done to the staff. Got Rob looked at immediately and stitched up relatively quickly.
So don't forget to bring at least a basic first aid kit and perhaps do a St Johns course too. You never know when you may need to use the skills.
Apart from that great ride. Thanks all for waiting for me! Boy do I need to do some more training before the Scott and Fling.
PS: I'll post some gory photos up later tonight after dinner.

Yes - big thanks to medic Buck for fixing me up after what was a small OTB turned out a bit nasty due to jagged rocks. And thanks to John & Staffe for shuttling back to the ferry.
Everything feels fine now, but let's see if that changes in the morning.
Agreed - that aside from this the ride was tops. But man, was it hot!
I just need to work out how to get the images of the @#$% nokia phone and I'll upload the cut - in it's fresh glory just minutes after the cut. I do hope it'll heal all right so you can go hard in the Scott 24hour.
Rob is the hell man
The new trend of needing stitches is better than the run of broken bones we had. Heal quickly Rob.
John.
Well I've put a few pics up of Rob's trip to Hornsby Hospital. Some are censored as they are a bit graphic so you'll need to be in the Uncensored group to view it.
Rob can tell us how to join that group to see all the good stuff!
Edit:Yeah, just go here and subscribe to the group: http://nobmob.com/node/2261

are you gonna be right for canberra???
Rob that looks horrible - hope you're feeling OK today - triple ouch!
Agree about carrying basic first aid stuff. Is there anyone on here knowledgeable to suggest a basic kit? I'm assuming plasters, bandage and pain killers would be a good start?
a few Band-Aid Strips
Triangular Bandage
wide crepe bandage
face mask
gloves
emergency blanket
That easily fits into a jersey pocket
for longer rides with bigger groups something like this https://secure.stjohn.org.au/nswshop/product-det...
I think it would be wise to get a kit which includes those small tape stitches - not sure what they are called?
Tom
Thats HUGE!!!
Hope you're alright and it heals quickly mate!!
If you're a maybe for Canberra, you're definitely out for the grand prix hey?
Get well soon!

I carry the St Johns Small Leisure Kit & just empty it into a ziplock bag, & squezze out all the air to make it alot smaller. On longer ride over 60K, or when im riding backcountry with friends or on my own in the snowys ill add a few more items & sometimes borrow an Eperb, as phones dont always work.
Id also advice anyone who rides any distance form the car no matter how small todo a senior firstaid course its only about $160 & takes 2days, but its well worth it. only just renewed mine in march, but next year ill be doing the remote area course instead as it covers a lot more. Espacially for people, going into the outdoors & more remote areas which as MTB we tend todo this alot
Hope that helps LadyToast

If your not out there doing it,
Someone else is
Rob, now that's going to leave a scar that the chicks will love, you need to come up with a really good story to go with it because falling off my bike doesn't do it justice.
Get well and I hope you are left handed.
Oooh... these look nice.
What was funny is that because of where this is I couldn't actually see, but the other guys were all standing around going, "Wow - that's deep", "That'll need stitches", and other such comments. So much for reassuring the patient!
The doctors said I should be fine for Stromlo. Yellowmundee might be in doubt though. Tien told me to TTFU and do that - will talk to the team and make a call when the dressing comes off on Tuesday.
To be honest it doesn't feel that bad at all today, in fact I'd go so far as to say abrasions hurt more (there are a few of them on my right hip). No real lack of movement or anything so it's all good.
haha Tough mate!!
Don't push it if you can't ride mate.
Last thing you want to be doing is popping open stitches on the trail!!
I also carry the St Johns kit. It is a bit bulky but it came in handy yesterday. The extra half kilo isn't going to kill me.
As for first aid training. I did mine in the Army Reserves but the St Johns would be more relevant to the injuries you are likely to see on the trail.
It was quite fortunate actually because there was no mobile reception down Shephards Gully too so even more reason to carry a first aid kit.
Butterfly strips. No, you're probably better leaving it open until you can get it seen to properly so get it cleaned out.
I've never even contemplated carrying first aid until yesterday. I'm getting a kit for sure - just need to find a lightweight kit. I've never seen a cut like that, normally it is just scrapes and bruises.
I feel really bad about this. On the top of the hill I offered Rob to go first which he did. Next time I'll go first
Good to hear you'll be 100% for the canberra race.
I'll be upgrading my first aid kit,& start carrying it with me from now on, after seeing the gash on rob's arm yesterday.
hope it heals quickly & you don't miss too much ride time.
Hey - don't go feeling bad - maybe I was a bit gung-ho after feeling good all day. Always the way, you know the risk and ride what you think is a good line. Just slipped off on the moss and was unlucky (or lucky, depending on your point of view) about the jagged rock I landed on.
Thanks for all your wishes, hope it'll heal up nice and fast.
... to hear/see about your cut!
Looks very painful.
Get well soon, so you can Race!!
Bernd
Dumb sh1t. Heal quickly and get well soon.
Hope it fixes up in a flash!.
Peter
Well mate, you certainly like to do things properly... Or is it your secret desire for nurses outfits?
That is a good looking gash, hopefully you can avoid infection by keeping it clean... that would probably be the bigger concern i.e. wrt. getting back on the bike soon.
As Alchemist said, the problem with most self-repair cuts, grazes etc. is that they aren't cleaned out properly (even the professionals fail to do sometimes). A small bottle of Savlon (or some antiseptic equivalent that can be sprayed on) would be a handy addition to the first aid kit.
Tat's are old school, scars are where it's at! Hopefully you be more inclined to come road riding now ay?
Get better soon mate.
I want one - well not really
Excellent scarification
I've also found medi-pulv to be a good anticeptic
It's in a small pack and a powder so it doesn't sting
Just puff it on and keeps everything nice and germ free
We poured water over it at the time and Buck had sterile dressings which was good. At the hospital after they sprayed with more saline they were talking about scrubbing it out but the doctor thought it looked clean enough so didn't bother. Shame - 'cos you all know how much I love wounds being scrubbed out.
Anyhow - so later the doctor said there was a 50/50 chance of getting infected, I could either wait and see if that happened and get some antibiotics from the GP if it did, or take some from the get go. Like - durh! So I'm on the big green pills for 5 days to make sure.
only 50/50?
Yeah, just wait till its gangrenous and about to fall off to be sure.. Then you better only start taking anti-biotics then
