I have some feedback from council. The proposal (as posted by Noel) is out for comment from the public. They will take the feedback from the public (us) and assess the level of support for each area of the Unstructured Recreation Draft Plan. Its pretty simple. If there is a lot of support from the public for a particular area of the plan (for example bushwalking) then they will progress it and put it to council for a capital works plan. If there is not a lot of support then it will be canned.

There have not been a lot of letters/emails written in support of a XC track so as it is it may not carry a lot of weight.

The times for comments closes in about a week.

If any can PLEASE write an email to Anthony Newling [email protected]

You could also copy [email protected]

And get your friends to write aswell. Even a one liner.

I’m sure you can think of what to say but some ideas;
You would use it, are supportive and think it’s a great idea
Its needed due to the lack of facilities in the area and the provision of such a facility would reduce the impact on other areas where bikes are now going illegally.
You would be supportive of being involved in track maintenance
If you are local mention that you are local to the area and better still provide your address.

Etc etc

Please try to get anyone else you know to do the same!

There is a lot of support within the council but in some ways they are just members of the public and need public opinion to push the cause.

If they could get 100 legit emails of support it would really help this become reality.

Cheers

Campbell

Thank you for your submission regarding mountain bike trails in the Draft Unstructured Recreation Strategy. Based on the level of support that has been shown by the community there is a strong demand for off road mountain bike trails. A report regarding the submissions received during the public exhibition period will be considered by Council at the December Ordinary Meeting on the 10th December 2008.

I should point out that funds have not been identified to develop any off road mountain bike trails by Council. The Unstructured Recreation Strategy was developed to provide a policy and strategic direction for the management of (present and future) unstructured recreation facilities in the Shire.

Your submissions have identified that there is a strong demand for off road mountain bike trails and this will be reinforced in the report which will go to Council in December.

kind regards

Dana Spence

Just got his email

“Council, at its meeting of 12 December 2008 considered a report on the Unstructured Recreation Strategy.

Mr Campbell King, on behalf of the Hornsby Shire Mountain Bike Alliance, addressed Council regarding this item.

RESOLVED ON THE MOTION OF COUNCILLOR McMurdo, seconded by COUNCILLOR Mills,

THAT:

1. Council adopt the Unstructured Recreation Strategy attached to Report No. EN49/08.

2. Council authorise further investigation into the development of mountain bike trails within the Hornsby local government area.

3. The results of the investigations arising from recommendation 2 are reported to Council for its consideration.

As a result of the high level of interest in the development of mountain biking facilities within the Hornsby Shire a community group - the Hornsby Shire Mountain Bike Alliance - has formed.

If you would like to register your support for the project and ensure your ideas are considered please go to http://hsmba.info/ and register.”

Council's Bushland and Biodiversity Team are co-ordinating these investigations. Should you have any further questions regarding mountain biking please contact Anthony Newling, Council's Co-ordinator Bushland Management Operations, on 9847 6839.

Thank you for your submission.

Well done everyone who emailed - power to the MTB community.

and then start bombarding them with letters and emails asking as to the progress of the "further investigation"

The community will have a lot to do with this investigation (Hornsby Shire Mountain Bike Alliance is written into the actual recommendation council voted on). HSMBA are going to write to all registered members and ask for trail ideas. These are going to collated by a team of guys/girl and when finished we will put these to council. We also aim to help push the process along by assisting in the writing of the report as well (although council will write the final report based on all information provided to them). This may also involve surveys, literature reviews etc etc.

It might take a few months before something is finished and put to council.

Having said that, letters pressuring council to get it finished cant hurt!

If you wish to contribute ideas on where trails might go (no matter how small or GRAND) please register at hsmba.info (many already have) and you will be sent an email with details on how to provide trail idea feeback.

The other big factor is access to Berowra Valley Regional Park (managed by NPWS). I encourage everyone to help put pressure on NPWS by acting on the links provided by Rob and others on nobmob for this purpose. This action will then help feed pressure down the pipeline to access to BVRP and other places in Sydney.

Maybe you, Noel, Shano or a couple of other locals could organise a few social rides up that way so that the not so local people will have a better chance of submitting individual proposals that are relavent and well informed as opposed to just a general desire for more trails.

Well done guys and gals

Let there be light

I have copied the email I received from Hornsby Council in response to my letter in Oct 08, which have also included for encouragement/ideas for the this round of suggestions and support for some MTB facilities in Hornsby.
Thanks John.

Subject: Proposed mountain bike area

Dear Sir/Madam, I was thrilled to hear the Hornsby council is considering having a mountain bike area developed and would like to show my support for this. The range of people that enjoy mountain biking is very diverse across the ages and sexes and I was surprised 4 years ago when I first took my son to the Western Suburbs mountain bike club race day to find 120 people there to race, this facility is in the lower Blue mountains. Manly Warringah mountain bike club had a another track at Arcadia they have used for a number of years however ownership of the land has changed and it can not be used anymore. One problem with the lack of legal areas to ride around Sydney is that illegal tracks get built and that in turns gives our group a bad reputation. National parks and wildlife have in the last six months closed many of the tracks on the Northern beaches that have been used for years and left riders with not much more than a bunch of fire roads to ride, which is sort of like fishing in a swimming pool.
Many countries have developed fantastic mountain biking facilities and they have become considerable tourist attractions and this too could be a boost to the local area. If this area was to go ahead then I'm sure that mountain bike clubs would get involved in the construction and matinence of trails etc. I hope this has been helpful.

Yours Sincerly

Any new news here???

Seems council has had its proposed levy declined so the local residents are not going to directly pay for the URS.

Brings me to question.....how are council going to foot the bill for this one?

Check out this link and select the HAVE YOUR SAY about the decision to move forward with mtb in the OMV but hold the progress on the link from Westleigh as proposed by World Trail (and to not even investigate the environmental impact).

Currently HSC are backing:
-A plan for a XC trail at Old Mans Valley (between Hornsby CBD and the Quarry) with WorldTrai involved.

-Little off-road cycling park at Montview Oval (pumps, jumps etc) with DirtZ involved.

It's about to be reality, Thanks to all who got behind it in the early stages and stuck with it... hopefully 3 weeks and it will be open!
